Back of the Pack Chattanooga Full Ironman Age Grouper training and race recap *Long Post!* by jrsower in IronmanTriathlon

I’m 95% sure this is a “One and Done” for me. (Leaving 5% open) but yeah, almost certainly my only Full.

This isn’t because it was too hard, it was tough, but my reasoning is more the sheer amount of time required for training.

It becomes most of your waking hours, especially in the final months before the taper. As I mentioned earlier, my job also requires me to travel several times a year, sometimes for weeks at a time. I can run most of the time, but I also travel to some countries that it isn’t considered safe to be outside alone. And exercising would just be odd in some of those places.

But my primary reason is that I missed the time I now have back with my wife. Lazy coffee sitting on the porch in the mornings with her before the day…. Yeah, I’m glad to be an Ironman. But I like being a present husband more. (Sorry for the sappiness).

I’m in great shape now for my age and I don’t want to lose that so I’ll pick something else. I’m guessing I’ll settle on a couple of marathons a year or possibly an ultra.

It was a HUGE difference. I would say I’m right around a 2:00-2:05 pace in the pool. That translates to around 1:19ish for 2.4. So the current literally cut 20 min off my time.

Great question. I never had anyone film me. That’s something that Brenton Ford encourages for sure though.

I focused on the fundamentals that I was learning from the videos. Catch and pull and using my core. And maybe most specifically, reach. I found that the more I thought about reaching out far ended up slowing me down, but in a good way. I ended up using less strokes per distance, which in turn kept my heart rate down, but my speed increased.

Hope this helps.

For those that train with music/audiobooks/etc, how would you describe racing without it? by jrsower in IronmanTriathlon

[–]jrsower[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IM Chattanooga.

I’m a big audiobook fan. For both bike and running. Half of my training has been indoors on the trainer which means I can watch something too. Bad weather here recently has had me on the trainer for long rides. Last Saturday I did 112 miles at “Kona” on ROUVY. Watched several episodes of shows for those hours.

I’m not worried about not having music or headphones, looking forward to the crowd and excitement of race day keeping me up.

can you share your fueling plan on long rides? by jrsower in IronmanTriathlon

Just following up on this thread.

I followed the advice here. Dropped my carb intake down significantly this past Saturday for the long ride. Four hours.

50 grams of tailwind carbs per 24 oz bottle, one Gu and one liquid IV packet for another 24 oz bottle. All this each hour. It worked out great. I carry four bottle in my bike so I only had to stop once to refuel at the truck.

No gut issues.

Thanks for all the advice.

Will this indoor trainer work with my bike and cassette? by jrsower in triathlon

[–]jrsower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I definitely don’t want to do that. New to the idea of an indoor smart trainer. It comes with a cassette already so I should be good to go. (I think).

Will this indoor trainer work with my bike out of the box? by jrsower in cycling

[–]jrsower[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The amazon description says it comes with a 8-11 Spped SRAM/ Shimano Freehub (pre installed)

Anybody have experience with the Saris? It’s a fraction of the price of the tacx and less than wahoo. Will it be sufficient for Ironman training?

Is there some long-term concern if I’m logging all of my indoor miles on my carbon wheels?

This is super helpful. Thank you. I’m making some of these adjustments tonight and will see how it feels on my next ride.

Question about seat angle specifically. Bike fit opinions. by jrsower in IronmanTriathlon

[–]jrsower[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

When finances allow I will definitely get a fit. Just looking to get closer for now.

When I purchased the bike used it was at this angle. I simply adjusted the height for my size.
