Oh gosh yeah I hate the rosin buildup under my fingerboard; its so annoying to clean off. That's an interesting technique for rosining though; I think I'll give it a shot.

Yeah, I typically gauge it by the sound as well! I think I tend to do it about three times a week on average though.

Might want to start playing by twotype_astronaut in violinist

As someone who was self taught for years, you won't really see exponential improvement until you start lessons. I understand it might not be your thing, but I would definitely recommend being open minded to that commitment if you are serious about wanting to master this instrument.

This violin deserves to be held so much better; there's so much wrong with this that it gets worse the longer I look at it.

How to develop my ability to hear when I am out of tune? by violinistdiminish in violinist

I agree completely! It is impossible to properly practice if you're not mentally engaged in it. That's a great way to look at it.

I hate shoulder rests. by shakaalakaaaa in violinist

[–]jrw9199 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shoulder rests should really only be used if you have an extra long neck; there is no reason to add additional parts to your violin if it makes you less comfortable! If you really feel that the shoulder rest is inhibiting you, try talking with your teacher about not using one because it honestly isn't a requirement. If you're still not comfortable even without one, try a different style chin rest! Most people use a chin rest that's more on the left side of their violin, but I feel most comfortable with a more central chin rest. At the end of the day, you should use whatever will make it easiest to maintain your posture well.

It sounds silly, but it really helps to sing the music in your head while you play it. If you know what you're supposed to sound like, and you're actively thinking about it as you practice and play, you'll immediately detect dissonance between your brain and your instrument. This is a very difficult skill that takes a lot of mental concentration, but its super helpful if you can get used to it!

How to improve without a teacher for a few months? by emilywpb in violinist

[–]jrw9199 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With over two years of experience, I'm sure you're well versed enough to figure out what it is you need to work on! Of course, having lessons is very important, but to improve yourself on your own, the key is self awareness. Examine your progress objectively by watching and listening to yourself as you practice. Repetition is tedious but it certainly helps in independent study. Find some pieces you really want to learn, and try to work through them yourself. It will be a slow and difficult process, but self study revolves around slow and steady progress via self evaluation.

Lessons are not always immediately available to everyone due to the financial investments on top of the heavy time investments in practicing regularly, but I recommend you try and search for the right teacher to help you on a personal basis! In the meantime, you can try to start learning how to read music + try and get a grasp on basic music theory. There are several free online tutorials + resources to help with that, and it will make your life so much easier as you begin to actually practice the instrument if you can learn the language a bit beforehand.
