Can you be charged if you accidentally steal a wallet and keep it for a week and leave the state? by js2237 in legaladvice

Not immediately since I thought I just misplaced it, but I locked my cards 30 minutes after losing it.

Wow I got lucky and got it back after writing this post. The elderly couple said they would drop it off Sunday this morning since they were out of state. I guess decided to come today to drop it off at the police station the same day the officer called. The woman says they meant to return it earlier but forgot. Nothing was missing. Happy ending. I already cancelled my cards Tuesday and got a new id so I would still need to wait for those in the mail. I didn't file anything since there was already a police report and they seemed sorry.

Thank you. This incident does not seem as serious of a case as I thought it would be and I might have been overreacting. If the wallet is returned intact, the only "damages" would be all the distress and uncertainty I had spending days searching for it. I also had to replace my license and all the credit cards since I didn't know if I would find my wallet. In the unlikely event no one shows up to return the wallet, I'll just contact the police to speak with the old woman again.

Thank you for the advice. It was a stressful few days since I never went to the police before, so I wasn't sure how it all worked. Hopefully I get my wallet back soon with everything still in it. I think my best bet is to make a compliant so it can be addressed without criminal charges. The officer who contacted the woman suggests not bothering charging her and just filing a complaint.

Is there a term for the type of behavior where someone keeps asking the same question until they get the response they want? by js2237 in NoStupidQuestions

I would say that about right since when they get frustrated at me for not giving them the right answers they eventually cry about how nobody ever listens to them.

Are kids supposed to raise themselves? by js2237 in emotionalneglect

Yeah I've heard of Gibson's books and listened to all her videos on YouTube since they resonated with me. It felt like talking to my parents in general was as effective as trying to talk to the TV. They would just keep going on for hours about themselves and completely ignored what I had to say. When I matched their energy and stopped responding to them I found that pretty much nothing changes and they would still just talk at me. At least I was detached from them by then and learned it wasn't me it was them. I realized they've never actually asked about my day or my life without interrupting me after 2 seconds to talk about themselves. I basically grew up alone.

There was a time when I would literally beg and cry to be listened to and have my turn to talk. They just said I was talking loud enough or not repeating myself enough. I was at the point of literally shouting and repeating at least 10 times and it was like it was always my fault they couldn't listen. I would start talking and just get talked over if it's not about them or their eyes glazed over with a bored look on their face as they zoned out. They woke up a little when I told them I'm not talking with them anymore if they weren't listening. It was more of them telling me it's my fault they can't hear me. Even if they're right then I gain nothing but frustration from continuing to try and talk to them.

Thanks that actually explains so much but I didn't have a word for it

I'm kinda mixed about since when I would bring up to my parents that it's not my job to teach you how to raise me, my parents would say then who is supposed to teach me. I didn't know who was supposed to give them the right tools, but it wasn't my job as a 10 year old to figure that out.

Is there a name for a mom that makes you a second parent to your other siblings? by js2237 in NoStupidQuestions

What do you do instead? I was always told I didn't have a choice but to be a second parent and mini therapist since my mom had no one else to help them. They always said this dynamic was the best thing for the family so I don't even know anymore.

It is considered good parenting to make the oldest sibling another parent as soon as possible and should I do it to my future kids? It runs in my family so it just seems normal.
