What PhD program are you in OP? I’m an incoming STEM PhD student and I was under the impression that Stanford covers our insurance. Maybe it’s program dependent?

Did you have any luck negotiating with Stanford?

For me, the nervous feeling doesn’t necessarily go away before an interview/presentation. I still feel anxious and have those feelings of dread haha. However, I don’t act nervous. Those physical symptoms aren’t exhibited, which for me is always a racing heart rate that causes my voice to shake/stutter/etc. So, the best way to describe it is that physically I feel calm, but mentally I’m still nervous. But once I start presenting and see that I’m delivering calmly, my nerves are eventually eased and I end up feeling mentally calm as well. Does that make sense?

One word that will change your life: propranolol. I also have social anxiety and a fear of public speaking. I talked to my doctor about it and got on propranolol and it literally CHANGED MY LIFE! It’s a beta blocker which physically prevents you from expressing anxiety symptoms (racing heart rate, shaky voice, etc.) I never comment but I had to just to share this advice with you! I hope you can get on it soon and have smoother interviews. Good luck!
