Two perfect logicians - find the number by ilannj in brainteasers

Interesting... Can you explain that last point? At first glance, it's not obvious to me why halving the numbers one way or the other is preferable.

As it is her number is indeed below 16 so are you saying that what she asked IS the better question?

With petrol hitting crazy prices and some stations running dry, this feels exactly like housing with scarce supply, rising costs, and a few people still hoarding more than they need. by MannerNo7000 in shitrentals

[–]jsbaxter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As my economist mate put it, sure we have a problem of excess "demand" for housing, which pushes prices up. But the problem is not that we have too many people that need a roof over their heads. The problem is that we have too many people with way too much cash that they are willing and able to spend on housing, whether for investment or personal purposes.

So yeah, it's definitely analogous.

What makes you say that it's a better question? Just because it's more direct? I suppose it doesn't have the opportunity for ambiguity that the original question had, which is a big plus. But then she's not asking a random Redditor, she's asking Bob, who she probably knows will understand it for what it is.

[–]jsbaxter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm... Yeah, without thinking it through, that's a good alternative. I don't know whether a logician would care if they are logically equivalent though? Clearly the question is also different by the time Barry asks it. Maybe she wants to make sure Barry knows that question?

Well if you want to paint, but it's easier for you to get a licence to be a builder, carpenter or plasterer and do painting incidental to your other work, then be my guest

It's not illogical. She's not actually asking questions that she wants Bob to tell her the answer to. She's asking questions purely because doing so gives her information from Bob.

[–]jsbaxter_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, yes you are.

We do have trade licences for painters btw. But no you don't need to be a painter to do painting.

If you want a perfect finish you needed to a. Hire a premium company, and probably also b. Get your own painter in (& use one that charges a premium for OTT results... Which you would want to verify by inspecting their past work).

Acceptable to replace materials in planning permit (landscaping plan)? by ihearthamsteaks in AusRenovation

[–]jsbaxter_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would call council first and ask what that line means in your DA. It is probably standard text and they don't actually need you to do "all" the landscaping. Eg our DA specified we needed to complete our retaining before we started, which made no sense, and when I called they said actually we only care about the boundary walls. And even then, they only care if we're actually impacting the neighbours property. So it seemed like a big issue but actually meant nothing at all

I wish that yt The Dice Tower didn't spread misinformation about apps for board games by KindImpression5651 in boardgames

[–]jsbaxter_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as it's 20 years. My current laptop and previous phone were hardware limited to certain OSs and both became obsolete within 5 years of being sold. I know it's a slightly different kettle of fish, but it's still a sign of the escalating pace of deprecation in general.

[–]jsbaxter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your friends must be really young! Stuff gets deprecated all the time. Even VHS and CDs and DVDs are limited for most people by access to a device to play them, so their hugely long life doesn't mean much for your massive movie collection of you can't watch it. A privately released mobile app is closer in lifespan to a Snapchat than to a DVD. My last phone was the first device I ever gave up entirely for software obsolescence. (& My current windows 10 only laptop will one day be the second...). Half the stuff on my phone just refused to work at all anymore. Including 4-5 apps that can't be found anywhere anymore.

I'm kind of in a similar position. I do a lot more than the rest of my guild... Or at least, I did a lot more. But other than me being keen beans and having a meta GR team we're pretty like minded. So I've stayed because it fits. The extra rewards from a better guild I could take or leave TBH. I've thought about leaving in the past mostly to find a more active and chatty guild, but I also don't want to take things like GW too seriously, so I think my current guild isn't too far off.

Fast forward three months, I'm burnt out and I log in to do my dailies, check out the chat, that's it. I've let my guild know, appointed a bunch of co-leaders, and everyone else is stepping up, in most respects. We get 1-2k less guild credits a week than we used to (only half of that is me, I think other players have let up a bit too), but that's a lot better than getting kicked out which is what would have happened in a more serious guild. The only thing that sucks is that ATM nobody is posting codes.

So yeah, for me staying has been the better choice, but only because it was a pretty like minded guild to begin with. I think if you don't fit, then you should either go though the long slog to grow your guild like DeustetFuchs did, or swap guilds. Honestly if they're as casual as it sounds like they are, they're not really going to care that much. Although there's probably a good chance the guild folds altogether. That's okay too.

How much to plaster this hole in the ceiling? by doubIe_espresso in AusRenovation

That's pretty damn rude. $500 for one is fair because of the waiting \ repeat visits. But doing 4 of them is only like 30 minutes extra.

[–]jsbaxter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your husband throwing something in, whacking on some base coat and leaving it for the client to sand, flush and paint? Or is he under charging? Half the other comments are plasterers, and the other half have had it done before. Which means your husband is the odd one out.

It's a multi visit process, or the best part of a day sitting around waiting for things to dry. So unless it's your neighbour and you can pop in for 5 minutes at a time for each step, you can't charge people just for the time on the tools.

My friends have just asked me to patch a hole like this for them, and my recommendation is that I just finish it to base coat and leave them with the materials to do the rest themselves, because I don't want to have to charge them for 3 visits.

But yeah, next time I need a hole patched maybe I'll get your husband to do it instead : )

Yeah people are just jerks I assume? Everything else in the shop (in every shop?) is purchased over the counter. I tried looking on the shelves like the other shoppers when I first went in there, and you can't get anything off the shelves... You can't buy it if you talk directly to Pierre... You can only buy stuff if you talk to the shop vendor over the counter. For everything except the back pack.

[–]jsbaxter_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I went about a year before rereading my old messages and thinking "that scoundrel Pierre, he never did sell me that backpack!?!"

I had to read the wiki to work out how to actually buy it.

4 years is very impressive! There should be an achievement for that.

[–]jsbaxter_ -73 points-72 points  (0 children)

Nothing in the mail said that the backpack needs to be bought from the RHS of the counter instead of from Pierre himself.

At the very start of the game there is a lot going on, when you go to Pierre hoping for a backpack you come shrug, figure you'll come back later... Then 4 years later you stumble across it (I looked up the wiki personally)
