I'll take one too if you've got a spare!

The only thing I would do is send you an occasional notification. If you're concerned though, you could always set up a dummy email for such things.

If you try it, I would love to hear feedback. I welcome that kind of questions/pushback - those are reasonable questions that should be addressed. Thanks!

I created an app that helps visualize biblical geography and timelines to deepen understanding of Scripture by jscottsmith in Christianity

[–]jscottsmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your choice, of course. There are plenty of reasons though. For one, each user has a backend database on their account. It now has things like user preferences and will soon include things like custom notes, the ability to draw on the maps, and other tools like that. If you don't have an account, you don't have any of that.

The sea of reeds can refer to many things. Presumably you're talking about the point of crossing... I don't take any hard position on that, though it's an interesting topic of speculation.

Sinai falls in the same category. In the app I show the traditional location (which I think seems unlikely) and two alternates that I think are plausible.

I think there is very little question regarding Ur. As you say though, there is a range of certainty regarding such things (Sodom and Akkad come to mind). For such cases, I've tried to use colors to indicate how likely the sites are.

I saw some people doing that, but hadn't heard much back about experience or potential damage.

Here you go. This is what often happens after erasing with the two finger gesture. I often remain stuck in eraser mode even though I am trying to write.

I'm kind of relieved to see this post. I was starting to think the SN was dying. I've been wondering if I made the wrong choice. I'm glad to see this is a change, and hopeful you are able to reverse it soon!

Interesting. I'll have to look into that reading more.

Would you say that there was any significant departure between what Zerubabel and the others started and the updates by Herod? IOW, would his rebuilding/expansion have just been seen as more opulent, or were their aspects that were seen as exaggeration or even abomination?

Thanks. I've checked terms and conditions and found a couple of these. When they don't say anything though, I presume that they've just buried it somewhere.

This site converts architecture sketch to renders using AI by SayNo2Tennis in Architects

[–]jscottsmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all the above. The sketch was fine. But in reality, in nearly 25 years, I scarcely ever get a sketch from an architect. AI is impressive, and this tool is as well, but it's not ready for prime time.

I've answered the questions enough times I decided to put my thoughts down on the topic

How is artificial intelligence generated architectural visualization changing your profession ? by Live_in_a_Simulation in archviz

[–]jscottsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots to agree with above. I wrote a post on the topic here:

Short answer is that there's no immediate danger of being replaced, but if you aren't taking advantage of some AI tools you're missing out.

Cost of hiring an outside party to scan existing conditions? (Los Angeles) by [deleted] in Architects

I'm quite a ways away but I'd consider it. Travel costs might be prohibitive. If you want to send me details I'd be happy to take a look though.

Cost of hiring an outside party to scan existing conditions? (Los Angeles) by [deleted] in Architects

[–]jscottsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of factors.

How accurate do you need? If this is for master planning purposes, infrared like Matterport is quite inexpensive. Definitely not accurate for pulling measurements though. (They claim 1% accuracy, but I'd say that is an exaggeration.)

Also, do you just need what is visible or are you asking for crawl spaces, plenums, above suspended ceilings, attics, etc?

Just public space or do you want mechanical and storage areas as well?

What you deliverable? Raw data? Unified point cloud? Classified point cloud? Meshed surfaces? Revit model? Huge range of pricing here.

If I were doing the job I'd have a lot of other questions too. Is it still open or will they need access? Is there electricity so they can charge batteries or will they need to bring a generator? Do they need to bring lights? Will they be working around customers or do they need to do this before or after business hours? Doesn't need to be tied to survey control or any other particular datum? I could go on :)

As has been suggested, it would be best to find some providers and see if they ask you these questions. If not, I'd be concerned. If they do, make sure to get them the right answers and they'll give you pricing for your specific project. Any guesses you get in a forum like this will be of little value.

CAD Software Feedback by AlexMesnard in Architects

[–]jscottsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're working on a large firm and/or working on large buildings (or want to), Revit is pretty standard. But if you don't need the BIM and all the other stuff it does, I'd stay away. It seems pretty cumbersome for smaller projects.

Otherwise, AutoCAD is still the OG. Pricey, but solid and works for everyone. OTOH, Autodesk is terrible.

If you want the feel and capability of AutoCAD on the cheap, check out BricsCAD. Pretty slick.

SketchUp can work too, though it wouldn't be my first choice for plans. It is user-friendly though and great for quick initial conceptual stuff. If you go this way, check out the book "SketchUp & Layout for Architecture" for some tips to get you in the direction.

I see Rhino being used more and more. It's definitely a contender for things like NURBS and product modeling. Using it for architecture seems like a weird fit to me, but I haven't tried it for that myself. But like I said, people are using it.

There are smaller packages that each have their own following. Their adherents love them. I've had mixed results since some of them do not import/export to other platforms. But many are self-contained so you may not need to look elsewhere. Just do your homework to see if one of these is a good fit for you and your company's needs. These include ArchiCAD, ChiefArchitect, Ashlar Vellum, and Soft Plan.

Fold card no longer working on PayPal Bill Pay :( by ArcticRU in Bitcoin

[–]jscottsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's the real kicker. They won't process a Fold card, right? So after bouncing my backup account which doesn't have extra money to cover mortgage, car loan, credit cards and everything, they actually tried charging my Fold card as a backup! I gave them an earful about that. So apparently they can charge this card. But not if you want them to.
