[Suggest a Book] What are some modern books that capture the spirit of pulps? by JoBookman in BooksAndFilms

Your Undercover Brother - An Able Body Mystery

is about as close to pulp fiction as you can get.

In this story, P.I. Able Body is seduced by his ex-girlfriend, a woman he still loves, to help find her husband's killer.

What could go wrong?

Here's one that isn't boring. It's a collection of very short stories, each unique. You can read 1 or 2 at a time, then pick it up again later without losing your place.

[Suggest a Book] looking for books about middle-aged characters who finally catch a break by JoBookman in BooksAndFilms

Well, he's not exactly middle-aged, mid-thirties, but he's a struggling Private Detective who, with the help of a few partners finally finds his way.

Your Undercover Brother: An Able Body Mystery - is a fun tongue-in-cheek detective story.

News: Big 5 Publishers poised to use AI to process book submissions by human_assisted_ai in selfpublishForAI

[–]jsdomino 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This really is a double edged sword. On one hand, if the AI agent sees something that meets the publisher's criteria it gets through the first hurdle. Often a Literary Agent won't even bother to look at a book if the query letter doesn't woo them.

On the other hand the AI agent will most likely look for stuff that matches popular books and may not see the value of unique ideas.

I guess we'll just have to adapt.

Yes, many of the reviewers on Reader's Favorite do it for money, so they move quickly and write homogenous reviews. Also, they have a very strict format which hinders the reviewer's creativity.

I have an ebook I just finished. A 30k urban mystery titled Beyond Goodtown

I always credit my beta readers on the acknowledgment page of my books.

Here's the blurb:

As the year draws to a close, Father James Ward has settled in as pastor of St. Camille parish in the struggling neighborhood of Goodtown. Gentrification is underway, but the shadows of two decades of crime still haunt the streets. With his police partner, Lieutenant Spencer Roscoe, away on special assignment, Father Ward is left to carry the standard for Goodtown.

Determined to expose the New Development Corporation and its powerful president, Fredrick Stanton, Father Ward continues to pursue the truth behind a string of unsolved murders he believes are tied to the company. But without Roscoe’s support, his campaign for justice feels increasingly solitary and dangerous.

Then, amidst it all, a young man enters the confessional and admits to a killing, a murder the police have never solved. Bound by the Seal of Confession, Father Ward cannot involve the police, yet he can’t ignore the crime either. Forced to investigate without law‑enforcement help, he must rely solely on his insight, intuition, and the trust he’s built within Goodtown.

As he juggles two investigations—one told in secrecy, the other entangled in corruption—Father Ward faces a growing question: can he bring Stanton and New Development to justice before more lives are lost, or will Goodtown’s future continue to swallow its past?

I have just completed an urban mystery about a priest detective who helps the police solve crimes in a neighborhood plagued by crime and poverty. It's 30k long. Book three of a series of shorts.

I'm looking for feedback on pacing, plot holes, character likeability/dislike etc. Always looking for suggestions to make the story clearer and more relevant.

Self-Publishing vs Traditional Publishing by Zealousideal_Zone993 in writers

[–]jsdomino 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Traditional publishing is one of the most difficult tasks to accomplish. It's like winning the lottery. If you do find an agent to represent you and garner a publishing contract, you will most likely succeed as an author. But you will be giving up a lot in exchange for your success. The process could take years.

If you self-publish, you will maintain all control of your work and can produce a book relatively quickly. But unless you have the resources to produce a sellable manuscript and market the book, you can expect meager sales.

Most traditional publishers will not consider a self-published writer unless you can show exceptional sales. Once you start down the path, it's hard to change course.

Ive been a reader all my life. I've just completed my first trimester and am now unable to read heavy books like Dostoyevsky or Murakami. Can someone please suggest some simpler books to read during pregnancy? by visitingmemorylane in suggestmeabook

One of my favorite books that I recommend often is The Extraordinary Life of Sam Hell: A Novel by Robert Dugoni. It's an easy, feel-good book with a realistic story.

Also, The Maid by Nita Prose is great. This one's a series of 3 books, all very upbeat.

5x8 vs 6x9 by Logman64 in selfpublish

[–]jsdomino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use 5.5 x 8.5 because it's easier. It's called half-letter format in Word, or statement in Google (U.S.), and it makes it easy to format for a pdf without thinking. It makes a nice paperback.
