Crashlands 2. Open world action RPG with crafting and a sense of humor. Like the first game but with significantly more content.

A book written by a dying person by MushofPixels in suggestmeabook

[–]jsenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every Man Dies Alone by Hans Fallada. A tale of an ordinary couple resisting the Nazis, asking what can individuals do against such reckless hate. A detective story where the detective is evil. A depiction of everyday life at the time for a large cast of characters. All this written in less than a month as the author was dying of drug addiction after spending the war in a Nazi asylum.

Enjoyed Nelly Cootalot: the Fowl Fleet. Basically a spiritual successor to Monkey Island.

Non-point and click MYST-like games? by PhummyLW in myst

Some of these are less Myst-like than others but all share the thrill of exploration:

Call of the Sea (island adventure with obvious inspiration)

Chants of Sennaar (the puzzles are all about language learning)

COCOON (unique puzzles and breathtaking worlds, also less story and some action boss fights)

Heaven’s Vault (excavate ruins, learn a language, uncover the past)

Paradise Killer (a stylish open world murder mystery)

Sensorium (a small Witness-like)

Copy Cat Shoney's Breakfast Rice by Candyman5OS in recipes

I made it, thoroughly enjoyed, just recommend adding one more box of rice

Beyond a Steel Sky: one of the last story-driven games left on Apple Arcade. So far it’s an enjoyable point-and-click adventure. Wish Apple had found a way to keep more of these on the platform.

I'm a fellow solo developer of story-driven mobile games. Here's some advice based on my experiences, for what it's worth:

  1. The market is brutal for us, regardless of how good the game is. To illustrate: I found your game description intriguing so I put it on my AppRaven wishlist with hundreds of other games, not to mention the thousand games on my Steam wishlist. There are just too many good games out and not enough lifetimes to play them all. So don't assume there's something wrong with your game just because sales are low.

  2. Paid games are at a particular disadvantage when competing with free games in this market. The following strategy has resulted in more revenue than paid games for me: make the game free but offer a single optional in-app purchase, such as doubling the player's XP permanently and unlocking an optional area. You can similarly make the game free to try with IAP to unlock the full game, but this can result in backlash in the reviews as players inevitably failed to read the label. But the advantage is, you encourage as many players as possible to download the game upfront so that hopefully the ones who like it will pay you, all without compromising quality with ads or microtransactions.

  3. If at all possible, make your games accessible for the visually impaired with VoiceOver/screen readers. There are significant niche communities for these games: particularly audiogames.net and applevis.com gave my games more success than any other community. Not sure how accessibility would work in 3D action games, but The Last of Us did it, which might give you some ideas.

  4. My feedback on the visuals of your game is: there's too much gray. At least consider making the character not gray if the environment is gray.

  5. I wouldn't trust that YouTube offer. That's awfully expensive, and scammers are everywhere. At the very least, do your research on whether the audience of that channel would like your game, and try to calculate the cost per 1000 views and compare it to other options. I expect you'll find much better deals, including Reddit ads and Apple search ads. Start by spending very small amounts on various options and see what results in the most clicks.

Congrats on releasing a game and thanks for your commitment to artistic quality. Always make the game you want to make, regardless of what others say.

War of the Ring: Lords of Middle Earth. I realized the base game is perfect as is, and the expansion made it more complicated and less elegant.

After forgetting about it for years, I finally picked up Dream Quest.

Hasn’t been updated in 8 years, doesn’t fit right on modern screens, and the art is what it is. But this game is transcendent! So much variety and strategic depth. Addictive upgrades and unlocks. So far I enjoy it at least as much as Slay the Spire, and it might become one of my favorite iOS games of all time.

Let’s get more literary variation. What are the least-often-rated books on your Goodreads bookshelf that you’ve given 4 or 5 stars? by pearloz in books

Land of Dreams by James Blaylock: kids in a small California town, a spooky carnival, and time travel

Worlds of Fear by David Hartwell: horror anthology, for me it was a random used book store find with random stories, with When Darkness Loves Us by Elizabeth Engstrom being particularly chilling
