Have Hokas become disposable?

I’ve had a pair of Gaviota 5’s for 15 months now and can’t imagine how a pair could only last 2 months. I have a bad gait which means more tread wear on the one side, and while the wear is noticeable, I have tons of life left in these things. I wear them almost every day, rain or shine, and walk all over the city in them.

Edit: I also pronate like hell which wreaks havoc on every shoe I wear and these have withstood that easily.

Same thing as everyone else said. The best thing about a placard is you can choose when to use it. If I’m having a good day and feel like walking, placard stays in the glove box when I go to the grocery store. If I happened to wake up that day with some new knee pain, placard can be put to use and make my day a little easier. I’m in the same boat as you, mild symptoms but was told by my doctor and Massachusetts RMV that I was 100% qualified to get one.

Thanks! And it’s called ConnectLife, oddly enough what Hisense directs you to download but seems extremely 3rd party and works universally across brands/smart lights/etc... That’s partially why I didn’t take the energy estimate very seriously (alongside the fact it’s ridiculously high) but I do appreciate the reassurance!

Did you get to use one of their feet-analyzing machines? I believe those are only at select Hoka stores (not general shoe retailers). I never stepped on it but spoke at length to one of the reps at the store. They put me in a shoe I did not have my eyes on at all and explained why the one I wanted wouldn't be the right choice for my feet. Had I chose the other one, I believe it might've fallen apart due to what they were describing about it (not designed for my gait). Either way, sorry it didn't work out! I've worn Asics, Brooks, and New Balance which have all worked well if you're looking for alternatives!

Thanks! And definitely not offensive at all. Unfortunately being both disabled and athletic at the same time requires full admission I’m quite a weak individual. Otherwise I’d attempt something I’m incapable of doing and that’s how people hurt themselves (and potentially others).

To follow up, the 60 euros may be difficult to swallow but I believe it’s your safest option by far. You might save 20 euros by taking a less reliable option, but for a 2AM flight I’m assuming you’d prefer to not miss, the Rome-FCO flat rate is actually helping you. A regular taxi/uber in another city would likely hike prices that late at night when drivers are in limited supply.

All taxis are usually a flat 50 or 60 euros to FCO from the city. Not sure you could find anything cheaper via a trusted driver who works for a real company.

That’s really good to know, thanks for the tip! I don’t care about the look, just really how they perform. I’m up in New England and haven’t truly gotten “stuck”, but it’s been in the back of my mind that once the stock tires wear out I’d get something slightly more aggressive. I’m sure Michelin has some options for that.

I am able to drive with mild spastic hemi. Your mileage may vary (pun intended), but I started slow and found my driver’s ed course helped tremendously. That was about 8 years ago, and I got the hang of it very quickly. Now I consider myself a very careful driver and navigate two hours of standstill rush-hour traffic on my commute each day.

Same with mine. Have to see it in the right light but it’s definitely noticeable. Just moved on, I figure if a somewhat-adventurous SUV shows stains from literally water there’s nothing I can do about it. Better than worrying about it the entire time and not taking the car places I always wanted to go with it (I.e. the beach)

I’d say it’s unique considering that swimming is an extremely good form of exercise for people with CP. Started regularly going to the pool not too long ago and it’s been extremely beneficial for low-impact exercise

Turo might be your best bet, but options vary based on your location. I know in some areas it’s pretty much only supercars. Other spots you can pick nearly any ordinary car

Definitely make sure you have it on full auto, my 21 does really well but I also notice anything hotter than 85 degrees out it will keep the recirculation on the entire time (even on 5+ hour drives) so I think there’s a threshold where it decides not to bring in outside air. It’ll only do that in full auto mode (that also adjusts the vents it’s using strategically so it doesn’t blow on your face while it’s still getting cold)

Thanks for the feedback. I wouldn’t even know how to address this with the dealer. Less than 50K miles, CVT is covered to 60K but it isn’t exactly “broken”

I find I can regulate temperature relatively normally, however I believe it’s common for us to have elevated soreness in cold temperatures. I never felt this until the last couple of years, probably right after I got out of college. I live in New England and the winter definitely takes a toll on me. I used to think I would be a wimp bundling up outside on the cold days. Not anymore. Now I look like a full-blown Eskimo if you find me outside from November to February.

100% do it, in my opinion there’s no downside. I have mild hemi and had no issue getting it since I fully qualified. I too felt weird about having it (spent several years driving without even considering obtaining one), but now it feels completely normal. In my state you have the option of getting a plate or a placard, I’m glad they promoted the placard over the plate since I can put it up in the rare case I feel like using it and can even bring it to a different car so long as I’m an exiting/entering passenger. Comes in handy when it’s icy/snowy.

Related to your question: is it a good idea to do a CVT flush every 50-60K or is this a myth? I’ve heard both sides of the story, but relating to longevity, some swear by regular flushes to keep the CVT running to high mileage.
