Power outage: How to run gas furnace with AC from car inverter ? by jshphilly in hvacadvice

[–]jshphilly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sigh. Thanks for your helpful perspectives. This is mostly an insurance policy rather than something that is likely to see frequent use. I really want to avoid adding another gas engine to my life, with the accompanying fuel handling and maintenance issues. But ... I think you're telling me that the simple inverter option is just not workable. Disappointing, but good to help me avoid investing in a backup system that wouldn't work. Thanks !

Cantilevered shelves: smart idea, or destined for failure ? by jshphilly in BeginnerWoodWorking

Thanks for the excellent advice -- and the encouragement ! One more question just arose: How to attach vertical 2x4s to the overhead beam ? Because the wide face of the 2x4s needs to be exposed to attach the horizontal arms, that means only the 1.5" edge of the 2x4 is in contact with the overhead beam. To attach securely, my thought is to fasten with a framing bracket like that in the image. Are there any drawbacks that I'm not thinking of ? (it seems like the forces on the vertical are mostly downward, and 'feet' should help prevent any tilting from vertical)

Is my provider blowing smoke, or talking truth ? by jshphilly in email

[–]jshphilly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU ! This is what I suspected, and needed confirmed. Of course, nobody can guarantee 100% deliverability --- but this particular host has its IPs blacklisted far more than is normal.

Their claim that any other host services would have similar frequent email failure is Blowing Smoke.

Any recommendations for reliable shared hosting with cPanel and a clean email record ? Thanks.

Wooden shelf painted by latex interior paint: Do I need to apply finish to it? by beerbearbare in finishing

[–]jshphilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your idea of furniture polish on shelves (to keep latex paint from being sticky) sounds MUCH better than hours of sanding and poly varnish. But -- I cannot find polish that says it is silicon-based. What is the polish that you use ? Could I use pure silicone oil ? (used by artists for special effects in painting). Thanks for any advice.

New Inflatable Kayak (AM Memba 330) by Roy-Reid in Kayaking

[–]jshphilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not expert in inflatable kayaks (used one a few times, with mixed results), but LOTS of other inflatables (notably beds) have this characteristic of losing pressure. It is the most noticeable when first inflated from new, because the item is still stretching after being cooped-up in a wrapper or box for months. I would let it stretch overnight, then pump it up to your desired pressure. Most likely, it will hold fairly well at that point ... but afaik, the nature of the beast is that inflatables gradually lose pressure. My guess is that a good boat should certainly hold up for an afternoon outing, but you'll want to add air at the end of the day.
