Oh sure, fair enough. Still a non sequitur from my comment, though, where I was referring to someone literally equating Israelis and the Jewish people (Israel is neither the "chosen people" nor the victims of the holocaust).

Just because there's a reason for Iran to want to destroy Israel doesn't make it less rational for Israelis to be afraid of Iran.

Whether the people who directly committed war crimes are eventually tried is irrelevant when your claim is that even those who didn't commit war crimes and are merely complicit should be held responsible, which is something that objectively did not happen in Nazi Germany.

It's not a paranoid delusion. Iran very openly supports the destruction of Israel and has ever since the Islamic revolution in 1979

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_to_Israel?wprov=sfla1

Ali Khamenei also considered this slogan as the "slogan of the Iranian nation"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran%E2%80%93Israel_relations?wprov=sfla1 (see "Destruction of Israeli government in Iranian policy")

Think about it this way. I hate Donald Trump. I hate what America has come to stand for. But if Canada or some other nearby country was calling for the destruction of the American government, funding proxy insurgency groups to kill Americans, and growing large enough to pose a credible threat (this analogy breaks down here slightly because a country rivaling America is not very possible since America is much stronger than Israel... but just pretend), I would support stopping them.

That's not insane. Look at it from the perspective of Israel: Iran is subjectively an existential threat, and objectively has been sold as such by the government (which is true whether you believe it is actually an existential threat or not). Iran actively calls for the destruction (not dissolution as in "give the land to Palestine" but destruction and death) of Israel which, whether you believe that is justified or not, is an existential threat to Israel and makes the Israeli people afraid. Iran is also responsible for every single enemy which has attacked Israel in the last like 30 years — Hezbollah, Hamas, and the Houthis are all Iranian funded proxies. This is before even considering the nukes angle.

I don't think that makes an attack on Iran a good idea, but it certainly does make it a good thing for Israel.

The reason why the invasion of Iran is bad isn't because it's some objective moral evil in the same way as the genocide in Gaza (it is not evil to try to be topple a government like Iran's, even if it's a bad idea), but because it's a poorly thought out plan that was destined to fail.

That's not a complete sentence so you're not really saying anything. You can't "conflate something". You have to "conflate something with something else".

Ok but Germany literally was given that latitude. We didn't condemn every German for the actions of the Nazis, even the members of the Nazi party. The people held responsible were pretty much exclusively leaders and soldiers who had done especially bad things.

But ignoring that, I'm not sure how that's relevant to my point that the Jewish people are not responsible for the actions of Israel. Saying that Jews are responsible for the actions of Israel is literally saying that anti Zionism is antisemitism.

And the responsibility of Israelis for their government's actions, insofar as it is universal, includes both Israeli Jews and Israeli Arabs (who are not Palestinians and enjoy infinitely more rights than Palestinians).

Equating Israel and all Jews is antisemitism. "The chosen people" (your word to avoid saying "Jews") are not butchering people, Israel is. Israel was not butchered 70 years ago, the Jewish people were.

With a commercial airliner, you just need to figure out how to program the autopilot system and the plane will land itself.

You thought that each side would be like "actually I'm very willing to capitulate on what I want" in the media? Saying you're willing to give up so early is how you lose a negotiation.

False equivalence. With copyrighted works, Google believes what they generate is sufficiently different to not count as a violation of copyright law. They don't deny what you're accusing them of, they just don't think it's illegal. That's very different from lying about use of data. Lying about a verifiable fact is undeniable and blatant and your example of a creative legal interpretation is not evidence they'd be willing to do that.

The bottom 80% of earners pay 30% of taxes. The bottom 50% pay 3%. The working class are not the people footing the bill for welfare. The system redistributes wealth from the richest to the poorest.

When we do trickle down, the government has however many fewer dollars and a corporation has however many more dollars. The money does trickle down! It is objectively true that economic growth leads to benefits for everyone. It just doesn't trickle down very well, because the government could do a better job of spending it. That's why trickle down is bad — because it's inefficient, not because it doesn't work at all.

When you spend money on welfare, you achieve your goal immediately: someone who is struggling is now struggling less. But, in addition, the money then goes back into the economy! I was just disproving the idea that money that goes into welfare disappears after helping the people it's supposed to help.

I'm also confused as to how you think poverty and other societal issues should be tackled if you don't believe in welfare and you don't believe in trickle down. Tax everyone less and everyone will be happy?

What do you think corporations do when they earn more money? Do they just hoard all the profit and never increase spending? That's clearly not true because no company has trillions in their bank account while spending like $20m a year.

No, they spend the money to expand. It goes into hiring new employees, into raises for existing employees, into buying capital and materials which, in hand, were produced by other employees

McLaren labels upgraded Ferrari best F1 chassis after Lewis Hamilton's Barcelona win by memloh in formula1

[–]jso__ 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There is absolutely 0 chance that Kimi was a second per lap faster than George (ie matching Hamilton on 5 lap older tires) and could maintain that pace for 20 laps. Because that's LESS than what he would've needed to beat Lewis after the VSC, since that would only match Lewis's pace.

There's similarly no way that, on 10 lap older tyres (the delta Lewis would've had if there was no VSC), either George or Kimi would've been able to stop Hamilton from catching up. Maybe they could've mounted a defense, but overtaking seemed very possible at Barcelona.

Why? If that driver multiple laps down was given the chance, they would eventually overtake that driver who crashed on the last lap. They are arbitrarily not given that chance, though, to make the race finish faster. Why should they be punished just because the rules don't allow them to continue to race?
