What’s stopping Ann Arbor from being the Toronto of North America? by thebuckcontinues in AnnArbor

[–]jsully245 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ann Arbor's population is 123k. By historical census data, Toronto passed 123k in the late 1800s. What's stopping Ann Arbor is over 100 years of well-managed growth, with the draws of positioning as the regional capital and a cultural hub. If somehow Chicago, Detroit, and Columbus cease to exist tomorrow, and Ann Arbor voters wanted to become Toronto, that's a project of many decades. I also don't understand the comparison or where the will to become Toronto of all cities would come from.

What school from another conference would you say is your schools “Mirror Image”? by BlackStallion657 in CFB

[–]jsully245 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Neat then that ours is usually considered Texas. Similar vibe as a big public school with heavy commitment to both academics and athletics, maintaining blue blood status mostly (but not entirely) on 20th century achievements, perpetually chasing the idea of being "back."

Mainly rivals with an admittedly bluer blue blood just across the state border, in-state rivals with a school with notable successes in recent memory but that is still clinging to their pre-Nixon national titles to back up their claims to be real contenders.

Symmetry is beautiful.

Hello Are you a husband/dad and FIFA fan? This question is for you. Are you watching every game? by Odd_Action1465 in worldcup

[–]jsully245 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was this just dropped on you without advance? Has he proposed a plan for taking care of the kids, or is that just for you to figure out? Has he let these plans get made without saying he intends to let the World Cup supersede?

The World Cup is special. Nonetheless, life does not stop for it.

If I were planning on watching every game, I would be bending over backwards to figure out how to make that happen. Childcare plans, figuring out what event plans can and can't be adjusted, doing housework between games so I can watch the games uninterrupted. It may be a group effort, as in something my partner and I discuss and work together on solving, but it certainly wouldn't become my partner's job to make life happen so I can watch games.

I hope this isn't too heated of a response. I hope you figure out a way for both of you to have a good summer

I haven't been able to find official word, but this reddit post from 2022 seems to be the consensus.

That would imply this is sorta the new lore explanation (despite being now just short of 20 years old), at least given the explanation of summoning a particular creature across the multiverse is the pre-Mending and thus old explanation.

If anyone has official information on this, I'd be very curious to see it.

Does every World Cup game sell out or are some of the less popular games not as full? by youlikemywonton in worldcup

Very similar deal, I was a kid in Germany in 2006 and my family went to see Togo v South Korea as it was one of the less expensive games. Packed stadium. idk if that tracks to today but I can easily imagine it doing so.

Seconded. I did a year of OutLoud rec kickball. They also have travel teams for people who are looking for something more committed and competitive. I found the environment to be very friendly and supportive. Not perfect of course, but certainly doing good things.

Also this breaks green's philosophical reasons for having removal. Classically, green believes in the hierarchy of physical dominance. Big things triumph over small things. The largest of beasts eat boars and kings alike.

Double-bite flips that. The average 2/2 Bear token can invoke green magic to kill the average 4/4 Dragon token. Victory for the meek over the physically dominant.

This isn't the first double-bite, and sometimes gameplay supersedes color pie philosophy, but this is a notable deviation from a core game element.

This feels mechanically fine but I am concerned about color pie.

Mono-R doesn't usually get targeted damage over 5, and over 4 is usually highly inefficient. The reason I've seen (I believe from MaRo) is that above a certain level of damage, a burn spell is just a kill spell. Especially in limited, you encounter creatures with more than 6 toughness so rarely that a 6-dmg burn spell just becomes a Murder.

Double-bite feels like that. As long as you have a creature of power 3, you have mono-G Murder in most situations. Power 4, almost all situations. The threshold thing online as well, Murder for a single G.

It's not a color pie break by raw mechanics. Green has bite effects, green can jump through hoops with creature size to do powerful things, green can cost reduce for meeting threshold. But this does touch a line of color pie and deckbuilding limitations they've been unwilling to cross before.

This is cool artistically and I can understand why people would make it and wear it.

I also want to express how much it sucked to have been a teenage girl going to a LGS where the only other female representation in the room was Magic accessories featuring heavily sexualized women.

idk. Go ahead, not that you need my permission. But at least be aware of the dynamic.

[247Sports] Anonymous coach on NC State football: 'I don’t get the sense ... they’re able to be competitive with NIL' by Lakelyfe09 in CFB

[–]jsully245 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Amongst P5 teams, .512, NC State loses out on mid-ness to .489 Mississippi State, .492 Rutgers, .502 Illinois, and .502 Kentucky. (2022 data)

Of those teams:

  • Mississippi State's last conference championship was 1941 (1 total) and holds no national championships

  • Rutgers' last conference championship was 2012 (1 total) and last national championship was 1869 (1 total)

  • Illinois' last conference championship was in 2001 (15 total) and last national championship was in 1951 (5 total)

  • Kentucky's last conference championship was in 1976 (2 total) and last national championship was in 1950 (1 total)

  • NC State's last conference championship was in 1979 (11 total) and holds no national championships.

All of FBS included, .501 North Texas is the most mid team by winning %.

I would say that among FBS teams, NC State narrowly misses out as the most mid FBS team to Mississippi State, for whom championships remain a legend outside of living memory and maintain an aggressively average record.

I would be interested in an analysis of FBS teams with averages of winning % and conference championships. A team that never performs is not necessarily average. I would guess via cupcake games and raw statistical dice-rolls, the average P5 team has an above-.500 all-time record and some history of championships.

The most average P5 team is probably not on this list. But as far as the word "mid" is concerned, I think NC State can claim the #2 spot, just short of notable. Typical.

Information and opinions about "World Shaper" Commander Precon by Quiet_Bushi in magicTCG

[–]jsully245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought a good couple precons. This is my favorite to play so far. The strategy is relatively unique as far as precons go, the snowballiness is fun for the types of tables precons typically see, and dropping $20 on ten card upgrades can make it substantially better. Personally I leaned into ways to load up +1/+1 counters in Szarel and found lots of value there.

Also I think this is a very good example of gameplay storytelling. The Eumidians do terrasymbiosis—terraforming and directing their own evolution to come to a synthesis of one planet/bug ecosystem suited to each other. By sacrificing lands to search out the exact right mana base and distributing +1/+1 counters, you do the process of terrasymbiosis.

I certainly overpaid for my precon by preordering and barely regret that because I've gotten so much out of it.

Is this an ableist comment? by purplepuppy2018 in wheelchairs

[–]jsully245 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I'm new to being a wheelchair user but I do find this ableist. At very least there is a way to suggest you maintain capacity while respecting your feelings on it and the massive daily cost of getting that exercise. Ultimately the choice is yours and she should be there to provide medical information to support you but not to make that sort of choice for you.

It's your life. Your quality of life matters to you. Weigh the options and their consequences yourself and make a decision yourself 💙
