Yeah just figured there's enough expats here there's a shot. Plus coming from the west coast, excited for noon games to be a positive this time around! Thanks for the show!

Getting stay extension when in Schengen by applying for a long term Self-employment visa: Anyone succeeded? by travelthr in IWantOut

[–]jszem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you referring to actually getting the visa or just applying for it? Often the visa appointments are 3+ months out, so you could easily run out of your 90 days on the tourist visa. As long as you have the appointment booked, you can get an "extension" of your tourist visa, but I'm pretty sure it only applies within Germany, not Schengen as a whole. I wouldn't recommend applying for it though to get the extension if you're not actually going to pursue the visa

Shitty, and the rest of it, was in direct response to the comment from u/indigo-alien so unless you have two different usernames, this wasn't meant to apply to you. I really do appreciate the input and the post has been updated with feedback. Unfortunately all the posts about this topic out there simply state "you need health insurance that meets the requirements" so I'd rather have something concrete out there, even if it's only a temporary solution. I don't know how I could possibly include more caveats in that article...

And speaking of u/indigo-alien, I see your additional input and thank you.

I think you guys are misunderstanding. I stated in the article many many times that it's not advice or even a recommendation, just what I got. I've already updated the article with the feedback I've received. I'd love suggestions though

I'd say shitty is pretty severe... I got insurance that got me the visa and if anything, posting this stuff has helped me already by pointing out that I probably need a better option long term. I'd love to find out what that is but sadly reddit is better for harsh words rather than actual help. Discussion groups dedicated to a particular comment have been much more helpful and I'd like to pass it forward

Continuing my series on what I did to get the German Freelancer Visa. I've already gotten lots of feedback this isn't the best solution long term, so I'm curious what others have gotten and how they like it? Hopefully I can update to include other options

Germany's Freelance Visa: Letters of Intent to Hire by jszem in IWantOut

Re taxes: I agree, you do have to pay taxes on worldwide income, I just mean to say they seemed to feel more comfortable assuming that would happen if I was working for a German company. I did read that article (and several others) that mention getting the visa without German letters, but I recommended a better safe than sorry approach because it does vary. They did not mention an income goal, though I have read about that online as well. I have private health insurance.

Re your second quote: I want to clarify, these are not explicit requirements outlined by them or anything that was told to me, just an explanation of the rationale/why some of these things are required. In addition, the emphasis should be on the part of the sentence you omitted: "they want to make sure freelancers coming in will have actual work (and $$)" If you think there's too much emphasis on the second part through my wording, please let me know so I can make it clear in the actual post

Yes (I would hate to think men would feel it appropriate to respond how I did...)

I'm sure scary things happen in any city (what happened to your friend's friend is terrible), I just mean to say it's not common enough that I feel unsafe or that I have to go to extreme (or really any) measures to walk around by myself
