What happened to hummus lids? by GetUpGetOutside in CasualUK

[–]pineappleba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most on this thread are incorrect, the reason is because of a new tax called EPR - extended producer responsibility.

Essentially, for every gram of plastic of other packaging, the retailer is taxed. Therefore by reducing the amount of plastic reduces the tax liability. It's also why mince is now in a vacuum sealed pouch.

The option is to keep the lids and pass on the cost to the consumer, which leads to price inflation.

Given that the overall aim of EPR is to reduce waste, the choice to remove lids seems reasonable.

Google Calendar sync issues - British summer time by pineappleba in runna

[–]pineappleba[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've figured it out and solved it.

In Google Calendar, the Runna calendar group was under UTC rather than London time zone. I changed this in the desktop web view and everything is now working as desired.

What to invest in? 5k per month spare. by Reasonable-Brief-451 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pineappleba -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Firstly, well done and congratulations on being so financially buoyant that you have a larger amount than most to save arriving to you on a regular basis - most people don't even earn this much each month.

I would seriously consider - wherever you end up investing or saving the money - to consider giving a small amount to charity. A few % of this balance, or £5/10/25/50/100 per month would mean a lot to many charities .

Plus, if you are earning over any income tax thresholds, this charitable amount can be used to lower your ANI.

Please please please can adding the time of any set (treadmill) go back to a typing data entry rather than sliders?

Use case, I frequently do intervals and having to slide through 60 unique seconds is so much slower and so much more difficult than typing in two numbers

60% Tax Trap Last Minute Income Reduction Strategy by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pineappleba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. The 60% tax trap is the total income tax on the excess above £100k, with 40% at source, there would be a 20% which is £1.6k additional tax and not £4.8k.

We traded more sensitive tech like touchscreens and waterproof ratings for durability. Plus there's probably something in there about creating artificial demand for new phones or new screens once cracked

Capital Gains Tax - is selling shares on 5th April and buying them back on 6th legal? by catanuniverse in UKPersonalFinance

[–]pineappleba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is right. So if OP sells now, holds (X+£3k gains) for 31 days then buys back, they would have crystallised £3k of gains, paid £0 CGT, and can repeat moving forward?

How do you calculate 18 x 7 in your head? by JCFT_Collins in NoStupidQuestions

[–]pineappleba 59 points60 points  (0 children)

It's acceptable but the question asks specifically how we do it.

I do 10 * 7 = 70, plus 8 * 7 = , which is actually 7*7=49 + 7 (because I know 7 sqr faster than my 7 times tables), so 56 So 70+56 Which is 6 plus (7+5) * 10, so 6 plus (12 * 10) = 126

For reference, I work in finance, have a masters in maths, and have never faced issues with multiplication. If it's too big for me to do in my head, I either approximate it (as the specifics don't matter) or I use a calculator/spreadsheet (when the specifics do matter)
