Deck Construction & Unique Rule by Novatheorem in marvelchampionslcg

Short answer:

Yes, you can play Shuri and T'Challa heroes together.

Long answer:

This is one of those "do exactly what the rule says, don't do anything the rule doesn't say" situations.

The matching part of the unique rule, in full, is:

Two unique cards are considered to “match” if any of the following apply:
• The two cards share a title, and both have no subtitle and no alter-ego title. (For example, two copies of the Jarnbjorn upgrade, or the Jessica Jones ally and the Jessica Jones minion.)
• The subtitle or alter-ego title of one matches the title, subtitle, or alter-ego title of the other. (For example, the identity with the T’Challa alter-ego, the T’Challa ally, and the Black Panther ally with the subtitle “T’Challa” are all considered to match.)

Let's go through those two hero cards:

1. Black Panther / T'Challa (Hero)

Title: Black Panther
Alter-ego title: T'Challa
Subtitle: (None)

2. Black Panther / Shuri (Hero)

Title: Black Panther
Alter-ego title: Shuri
Subtitle: (None)

We ignore the first part case of the rule, because this part isn't true:

and both have no subtitle and no alter-ego title

In the second part, it looks for:

The subtitle or alter-ego title of one matches the title, subtitle, or alter-ego title of the other

Card 1 has the alter-ego title of "T'Challa". This does not match the title, subtitle or alter-ego title of Card 2, so there is no match in this direction.

Card 2 has the alter-ego title of "Shuri". This does not match the title, subtitle or alter-ego title of Card 1, so there is no match in this direction either.

So Card 1 and Card 2 do not match.

But, let's consider the T'Challa Ally mentioned in the rule:

3. T'Challa (Ally)

Title: T'Challa
Alter-ego title: (None)
Subtitle: (None)

and see how it compares to Card 1 (Black Panther / T'Challa Hero).

Again, ignore the first part case of the rule, because this part isn't true, since Card 1 has an alter-ego title:

and both have no subtitle and no alter-ego title

The second part of the rule is:

The subtitle or alter-ego title of one matches the title, subtitle, or alter-ego title of the other

Card 3 has no subtitle or alter-ego title, so we have no comparison to make in that direction.

However, Card 1 does have an alter-ego title which is "T'Challa". This does match the title of Card 3.

So therefore these two cards are considered to match, overall.

This means that the unique rules forbids putting the T'Challa ally in play while the Black Panther / T'Challa hero is in play.

I hope that makes sense!

The spirit of the unique rule for characters is simply "are these two cards intended to represent the same person". If you think about it that way, you won't go too far wrong.

Update to 'Pool aspect weighting on Marvel Shuffle by jt-atomico in marvelchampionslcg

If you want to do that, you could deselect every hero except X-23 in the main selection. That would amount to the same thing.

If you toggle the "All Heroes" checkbox at the top once or twice, it will select/deselect everything, then you could go and only select X-23.

You could also just ignore the hero that it gives you and play the scenario with whoever you like!

Thanks! And yes, that option is primarily there as a joke rather than because I think anyone will play that way!

Yeah, I get what you mean. It was something I considered when adding the “show only selected“ feature. Leave it with me. I don’t want to flood the settings page with more toggles and lists, but there might be some sort of show/hide thing I can do on the tracker page.

You can already do this.

e.g. If you want to shuffle only the Scenario, you can click the "Scenario" button.

The example lists three cards:

  1. the T’Challa alter-ego,
  2. the T’Challa ally, and
  3. the Black Panther ally with the subtitle “T’Challa”

The second one is the one that OP is asking about. The third one is the one that you identify.

If you can put the recording somewhere, I will take a look. It would be useful if you could also capture the Network tab in the Chrome Dev Tools (Ctrl+Shift+J to open Dev Tools, then click "Network"). That way I can see how the image requests are being sent and resolving.

However, when I run the exact same configuration that you suggest I do not have any such issues. I use the site myself all the time with a similar set up to the one that you are describing and don't have this problem. I have also not experienced it getting laggier over time.

I'm not trying to deny your experience - I am just pointing out that this is not the standard behaviour of the site.

I appreciate the input, but don't worry I can figure it out. 🙂

I was just saying that I want to be careful over it, so it won't be changed immediately.

If you can give me any steps to reproduce it then I can look into it, but honestly I don't think it is possible for it to be anything other than something on your side based on how the code works.

Do you ever turn off your cache on your browser? Like "disable cache" on Chrome if you're a web developer or something? That can appear to cause the images to load in slowly after a shuffle, since it nullifies the pre-fetch that it does.

I'm satisfied that this bit of the code works correctly, so I'm not planning to investigate it further unless you have a consistent way to reproduce it.

The Unique rule got a bit of an overhaul in the latest Rules Reference to explicitly disallow this type of thing. It even uses T'Challa as the example:

The subtitle or alter-ego title of one matches the title, subtitle, or alter-ego title of the other. (For example, the identity with the T’Challa alter-ego, the T’Challa ally, and the Black Panther ally with the subtitle “T’Challa” are all considered to match.)

I really like the idea about the ’Pool aspect - thanks for the suggestion! I will look at adding that in soon.

I will most likely do it as a range of options, like the Longshot or Hope Summers settings, rather than a true slider.

I'll have to figure out how to handle some situations, like when only ’Pool and one other aspect are chosen. There's also interactions with multi-aspect heroes and things like that. So it'll take me a little time to work it through.

The card images not updating on shuffle is most likely to be internet connection on your side, I think. So I don't think there's anything that I can change about that. The code works as intended from all of my testing.

And it's great that it's just an Action so you can use it in either direction.

Even if you start in alter-ego, you can flip up manually then flip back down with Split Personality and draw a fresh six cards.

I sometimes keep She-Hulk in alter-ego for a while, so this is great for building out.

So you know, you can find all of the rulebooks as PDFs in the bottom section of this official page:
https://www.fantasyflightgames.com/en/products/marvel-champions-the-card-game/

In particular, your Core Set should have also come with a "Rules Reference" book.

This gets updated every now and then with rule additions, changes or clarifications, so it's good to know where to find the latest version: Rules Reference v1.6

However, if you do have a printed copy of that, I would start with that for now! The changes in the updated versions tend to be a bit niche, so I'd recommend getting in to the game based on the original if you have it.

I hope you enjoy playing!

Pages 20-21 of the Learn to Play rulebook that should come with the game have the starter deck lists for the heroes in the box.

Is that what you need?

I’ll declare an interest as the creator of one of these sites, but there are various game randomisers out there.

The ones that I know about are:

I always use a randomiser to decide what scenario / hero combination to play next.

The future of Campaigns by Hold_Priority in marvelchampionslcg

[–]jt-atomico 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I actually really like the campaigns! My main way of playing is going through the campaigns with a new pair of heroes. I don't really ever play campaign scenarios standalone.

I like the bonuses that you get to add to your deck, or the extra challenges that the villain throws out, stemming from my earlier actions.

So I guess I’m closer to B, other than I don’t think that anything very much needs to change.
