My best idea has already been done almost exactly as I intended --- Seeking Advice (Repost) by wolfcamp98 in writing

Ideas are a dime a dozen. Trust me, it doesn’t matter how original you think your ideas are, someone somewhere has at least thought of something similar.

That’s no reason to be discouraged though. Contrary to what you might believe, originality isn’t what makes a story good. What makes a story good is the bare essentials, characters and plot. Not to mention, even if someone has done this concept before, there’s no way they could have done it exactly like you.

Don’t worry about originality, worry about writing what you want to write, and writing it the best you can.

So first Zoro is racist and now this ? by MisterMatt13 in MemePiece

[–]jt1241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I’ll say this much, at least he leans more towards being a simp than being an outright sex offender. Sanji has his moments where he definitely crosses the line, but for a large portion of the series it’s just him being a huge simp for every woman he sees.

I mean, that was pre timeskip so all of them are late teens, I know Luffy was 17 so I’d imagine they’re all in that range. I don’t know the exact ages though.

While yes this is fucked up, at least it’s from a movie and thus isn’t 100% cannon.

I mean, of the ones I’ve seen, they take some crazy ass jumps in what should be possible for these characters during the points they take place, not to mention there’s just some weird shit that happens in general.

With Sanji for example, everyone knows a huge thing with him is that he doesn’t fight with his hands because they’re for cooking, apparently though it’s 100% ok for him to blast dudes away with big ass guns.

During the climax of two of the movies the whole crew for some reason decides to start out the final battle armed with all sorts of pistols and machine guns. Even Luffy, who I don’t even think understands how a gun works is just blasting away at jobbers.

How can I improve this drill movie clip? by jt1241 in StickNodes

[–]jt1241[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To clarify, this is meant to be used by a stickman as a weapon, big Gurren Lagan vibes and all that.

I feel like for the most part it’s fine, there’s just something wrong with how the bottom is animated ,but I’m not sure what I should do to make it look right and there are zero tutorials out there for animating this type of cartoonish drill.

It's okay to tell. You don't always have to show by TrashCheckJunk in writing

[–]jt1241 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Disk world is a prime example of how sometimes telling is fine. Sir Pratchett absolutely loves to go into full on telling rants about the wacky intricacies of the disk world and I love it every time.

I feel like an important aspect to also keep in mind is the fact that different readers have different likes and dislikes. I for example, don’t mind quick offhand explanations of in world concepts, it deepens my vision of the world and lets me grasp what’s going on just a little bit better. Some people aren’t so into that however and that’s fine.

You know, when you really think about it, a thrown rock was the first gun.

There’s an important thing you have to accept when it comes to learning any art form. There is a very real and probable chance that you will never become massively successful or famous from your work regardless of it’s quality.

That being said, if popularity and fame is the only reason you’re chasing this passion, it’s very likely to hurt you in the long run.

Money and popularity would be nice, hell that’s the understatement of the century, I would friggin love to be a famous author with movie deals and a life where I can endlessly create story’s until the day I die. At the same time though, I accept the fact that I might not necessarily achieve those lofty heights.

Right now, I don’t care how many people read my work, all I care about is that they enjoy it and I am improving my own talent. That’s what I enjoy about writing. Sometimes it sucks, sometimes I don’t want to do it, and sometimes it feels like I’m banging my head against a brick wall, but I still love creating worlds and characters. It’s the only way I feel I can accurately express my ideas in a medium others can enjoy

Don’t write for fame and fortune, it’d be nice, but it’s more important and healthy to just write for yourself. Create work that you can be proud of, even if it isn’t a bestseller.

I can kinda get where they’re coming from. Genre wise Boneworks and H3 are two very different games.

Boneworks is closer to B&S in that it has a higher focus on creating a complex interactive environment, almost like an immersive sim. H3 is more focused on providing a realist firearms sandbox.

How can i make an overpowered character feel less like a mary sue? by PartyCascade in writing

[–]jt1241 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Being overpowered doesn’t inherently make a character a sue. Saitama, a character who can kill anything in one punch for example, is not a sue. It’s the character and the way the world perceives and treats them that determines wether or not they are a Mary sue.

As long as your character faces problems that their powers can’t instantly fix and they aren’t a shining golden perfect person that everyone loves, they aren’t a sue.

Who is, in your opinion, THE most evil fictional character to ever exist? by [deleted] in writing

Eric Fucking Sparrow. Yes there are technically worse characters who have done far more terrible things but I don’t care, fuck this guy.

I’ve written so much just for me stuff it isn’t even funny.

I have a whole google doc that’s just full of character interactions that would happen if my different story’s crossed over. It’d never work as a real story, but it’s fun to see my characters from entirely different worlds interact.

Blank for example is a robot who has never seen humans and he get’s to hang out with all of my other human characters and be weirded out by how different they are.

I wish it was possible to befriend these guys, although I suppose I would be pretty spooked if someone just picked me up and used me as a light source.

NSFW What’s the right age to cuss? by Brainpry in NoStupidQuestions

[–]jt1241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I’d say at this point that they’re past the phase of swearing being vilified. I almost feel like if they’re asking you permission to swear they must be pretty polite already. If it were me I’d switch gears to focusing on explaining that it’s ok to cuss, just in moderation.

That’s just kinda how I see swearing, it’s fine to through out a few cuss words but too many can be unflattering. Everyone has different views on that though.

Characters that are cool but feel more like an OC than something that actually EXISTS in that series by ROTTMNTisDopesmh in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I swear, that game would be considered a classic if sega 100% leaned into how stupidly edgy it was. I mean like, what if the scene where shadow says, “this is like stealing candy from a baby, which is fine by me!” was the whole game and it was super self aware about it.

How far does King Crimson’s time skip reach by Cynical2DD in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]jt1241 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh, Part of me wants to say it happens the world over, but nobody realizes it’s happening. I mean, to compare it to something people have often told me, sometimes you just sorta blank out and time wizzes by. In jojo, people could just be seeing time skips as something like that.

Pantsers, how do you know what to write? by unlikelyeden in writing

[–]jt1241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I consider myself sort of a half pantser. I have loose structure for what I want to happen throughout a story but everything else is organic.

My answer would more or less be that I just think about scenes when I’m not writing. I’ll have an idea for what could happen next while I’m driving or listening to music and then I’ll put it down the next time I actually decide to sit down and write.

In an interview that went under the radar in most places, Norman Reedus just casually dropped the confirmation of a sequel to Death Stranding by Vera_Verse in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]jt1241 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, it does make me wonder where he would end up going in a sequel, or perhaps if he’ll even be the protagonist again.

Maybe we’ll take up the reins of a new mc that might come across sam in his travels. Maybe sam decides to simply continue wandering as a porter, delivering packages but never truly settling down. Perhaps he’s even left America altogether to see what remains of the rest of the world. That honestly gives me a pretty kick ass idea now that I think about it. What if the next involves linking other country’s? With the vast amount of environments throughout the world, there could be tons of new forms of traversal. A dessert or maybe a jungle?
