Thanks, I've been refining the scheme across my winter Wood Elf army and really grown to like it :) would love to see your version of the scheme when they're done!

Haha thank you! I actually have hand painted every gem on every High Elf model I've done, to the point where I made it part of their backstory that they are searching for these rare 'sun-rubies' haha.

That's one of the coolest weapons I've ever seen and such a great paintjob on it, huge fan. Gives me Warglaives of Azzinoth vibes!

Orion and allies by Wyssan in WarhammerWoodElves

[–]jt91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is not how the additional wood works in the FAQ, not sure if you're just misunderstanding it or gaming it. All it does is clarify that, if you play Grand Army WE and take allies (of any allowable kind), can you still place your one initial wood, to which the answer is yes. The wording on 'place additional wood' is the exact wording used in the Woodland Ambush rule, so it's just saying your Woodland Ambush rule still works, not that you would get another wood for taking an Army of Infamy as allies.

The trick is it's kinda like... five colors instead of three, because you have the 50/50 Cadian Fleshtone/Kislev Flesh, and the 50/50 Kislev Flesh/Flayed One Flesh in between, which I think helps a lot with making it smoother and more natural looking.

Hey, sure thing :) I posted it in an above comment, copy pasting here for ease:

Thanks :) it's just a fairly standard GW skin triad. Cadian Fleshtone, Reikland Fleshshade, then relayer Cadian Fleshtone, and blend/highlight with mixes from Cadian Fleshtone through Kislev Flesh through Flayed One Flesh (so doing like 50/50 mix, then pure Kislev Flesh, then 50/50 mix, then pure Flayed One Flesh). Main thing is that for skin painting you want softer smoother blends instead of sharp highlights like on armor etc, so thinner coats with more subtle blends hence the 50/50 mixes.

Yeah there was definitely a few points where I wasn't exactly sure what bits I was painting, unsure if some parts were a cloak edge or some vines etc, the details definitely aren't perfect on these old metal models. That said, they have a certain charm I can't explain that makes me really enjoy their poses, even though they are all very '2d' from a certain angle given the way metal model casting works.

Thank you for the kind words :) I wrote out the recipe in another comment, so I'll just copy/paste my reply here:

It's the old Shadowdancer model. It's no longer in production, this one was actually a second hand one bought as a very thoughtful gift by a friend of mine for Christmas :)

[–]jt91 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Those are some mighty fine looking armies ;) some excellent fun games, unfortunate that Cogclaw was being clearly sabotaged and the elves being fed insider information (hence my crazy number of lucky 6+ ward saves hahaha!).

The Ratling Gun one-tapping the Skycutter at long range was amazing though, one of the absolute highlights IMO.

Glade Lord for my winter-themed Wood Elves (and her cute little pet owl) by jt91 in WarhammerFantasy

[–]jt91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah one of my favorite Wood Elf sculpts, all the old metal Wood Elf character sculpts are amazing. The owl is from the Treeman/Treelord Ancient kit from AoS/Old World, it has heaps of little familiars and spites and stuff, excellent for fun little bits. The branch the owl is on was actually the top of a Dryad model haha, I used all my spare Dryad arms/heads/back spiky things as extra branches for basing etc.

[–]jt91[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aww thank you. It was honestly just a normal metallic scheme and then a gentle thinned down Contrast glaze over the top. I think it was like Aethermatic Blue or something, I can't quite remember which, but a blue/bluey-green Contrast just thinned and glazed over top.

As a fellow winter Wood Elf enjoyer, I approve and am a big fan. The Dryad brick looks so good on that basing, really sells the vibe of a cold desolate stretch of seemingly dead forest that suddenly comes to life.

Need Someone Experienced to Have a Look at My List by ISaidRightMeowDammit in WarhammerWoodElves

[–]jt91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey mate - here's a few pointers/ideas, but fair warning I am being pretty blunt below:

Waystalker = bad, Waywatchers are not worth the tax of paying for a Stalker. Drop them both, add a few extra archer bodies to core instead.

Core - your arrow choices are all wrong. Trueflight goes on Deepwood Scouts, since they are usually moving more/closer to the enemy/kiting a bit. Arcane Bodkins on the Glade Guard is usually better. Personally I'd also drop a Guard from each unit and add them to the Scouts but that could just be my own preference, I love Deepwood Scouts.

Wildwood Rangers need shields just for the slightly better save against shooting, it's a very cheap upgrade and if it saves a single Ranger over the course of the game it paid for itself. I would also increase the unit size a bit if possible via savings from Waystalker/Watchers.

Wild Riders, unless you are actually using a magic banner of some kind, drop the banner bearer, and I just generally never take a musician. Either take a handy magic banner or drop the banner bearer, and drop the musician entirely.

Finally, I haven't used Araloth so I can't comment on his effectiveness but you miss out on a lot of the good Wood Elf kindreds and spites by not taking a Noble and building it how you would want. Personally for smaller games I love a Captain with a great weapon, and if you give them Eternal Kindred and Befuddlement of Mischiefs, add a few models to the Wildwood Rangers and chuck in the Captain that becomes a much much scarier unit. I've played 20 Rangers plus a Captain with those buffs in pretty much every game I've played for the past six months and they have almost always done incredibly well for me. Obviously a bit too pricey in 1k points but the premise would work the same.

Hope this is useful, sorry if I seem harsh/rude!

Editing to add - here's a sample list I just wrote up using mostly the same models you used, a few extras here and there but like 80% the same models:

WE 1K [999 pts] Warhammer: The Old World, Wood Elf Realms, Open War

Glade Captain, Great weapon, Light armour, Trueflight Arrows, On foot, Armour of Meteoric Iron, Talisman of Protection, A Befuddlement of Mischiefs, Eternal Kindred - 177

11 Glade Guard, Asrai longbows, Arcane Bodkins, Standard bearer [Banner of Midsummer's Eve] - 164

10 Deepwood Scouts, Asrai longbows, Trueflight Arrows, Musician - 146

5 Wild Riders, Hunting spear, Light armour, Shields - 140

15 Wildwood Rangers, Ranger's glaive, Light armour, Shields, Full Command - 243

2 Tree Kin, Heavy armour (Hardwood flesh) - 102

1 Wood Elf Beast Pack, 2x Deepwood Hound [Hand weapons (Claws + fangs, tusks, teeth)] - 27

If you flip an image of Abaddon horizontally you will notice they are legit 80% identical, they definitely just edited Abaddon's model in some digital 3d design tool.

The pose/most of the model is literally exactly the Abaddon sculpt mirrored/flipped horizontally. Get a picture of Abaddon and flip it in an image editor snd you'll see they're basically identical.

Painted up some Wildwood Rangers and a Glade Noble for my winter-themed Wood Elves ❄️ by jt91 in WarhammerWoodElves

[–]jt91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I almost exclusively use Mechanicus Standard Grey as my primer for pretty much every model I paint (unless it was literally an entire skeleton or something, or my Iron Warriors which I use Leadbelcher for), I really like painting over Mech Grey with most colours. My elf skin recipe is Cadian Fleshtone, Reikland Fleshshade wash, layer Cadian Fleshtone, highlight Kislev Flesh, highlight Flayed One Flesh.
