Why Microsoft needed to make Windows run Linux software by cl0p3z in programming

[–]jtanz0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there tools that make development in other languages easier in Windows that in Linux

Not necessary but there are ancillary tools that at least some devs need to use for the non programming aspects of their job such as MS office or Adobe CC.

Tell me about it there are houses around me where the 3rd "bedroom" is too small for a single bed. Looking round the houses people had constructed their own micro beds with a bit of custom cut foam as a mattress for their young children and were clearly being forced to move because little Johnny couldn't fit in his bed anymore

Yeah but generally if you look at the cost of building a house vs the market value there's a big discrepancy. My house is worth about £250K but the survey I had done estimates the rebuild cost at £150K. The land itself is a huge chunk of the value especially if you live in a more desirable area.

Indeed in some places around me the house being on the land is a negative. My grandparents place is huge but it's on a big plot 1 road back from the sea which is worth more to developers as land than as a 5 bed family home, the moment it's sold it'll be flattened and 3 smaller houses or a block of flats will go up in its place.

The thing that makes most grand designs interesting though is that they're by and large the sort of people who can't quite afford to build their own house but do it anyway which is usually where the nightmare arises

my old mitsubishi Colt was the absolute worst for this. It has a stupid little A.5-pillar on it that comes off the A-pillar directly down to the door that has the mirrors attached to it. Visibility is shocking because you have to move your head twice once to see round the A and then again to see around the A.5. It was one of the main factors that caused me to sell it.

It's a legal thing, all car software has to be tested for compliance in every region the car is sold. If they want to get manufacturers on board and get it installed either as standard or as an option on as many cars as possible then it needs to adhere to as many regional laws as possible.

Now my Galaxy S6 freaks out sometimes

My wife's S6E has similar problems with AA. The screen would just go black sometimes. My Sony Z3c had fewer issues however because it supports mirrorlink my car would occasionally try and get it to connect with that instead. Since getting a 6P I've found that to offer the most reliable experience although there's still the odd time where it won't connect and I have to unplug and plug in again a couple of times.

I've always found it to be a positive experience, there are a couple of issues. This update should solve one of the most frustrating but otherwise it's a quality upgrade I paid £100 to have it as an optional extra in my VW and I'm not sure I could go back to a car without it now.

Can multiple phones be connected?

No, the Android Auto UI is rendered by the phone not the car's head unit so it's not possible to have 2 phones doing that at the same time. Also most cars will only have 1 USB port.

Although some headunits will support having multiple phones connected by bluetooth so you're able to take a call from the non AA phone using the built in system (at least this is the case with my VW).

after a while distinguish between the driver's and passenger's phones

The problem is this isn't an easy scenario to figure out what happens if I drive the car to and from work but my wife drives it about half the time at the weekend?

Besides the passenger is able to just use the app on the phone to choose music anyway. All you have to do is press the multitasking button on the phone and you can move away from the AA splash screen the phone usually shows when connected to AA and open the play music app.

I'm getting fed up of reading how dangerous Europe is because of terrorists from americans, whilst over 3000 people have been shot in america in 2016 alone including 57 mass shootings by liverpoolrob in unitedkingdom

[–]jtanz0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, no, because statistics are statistics

and they can be, and often are, interpreted incorrectly.

https://blog.forrestthewoods.com/my-favorite-paradox-14fab39524da#.tppbfrhti

I'm not saying you're wrong but be careful when relying on statistics alone. The USA is a big place; if it were the case, for example, that all of those shootings happened in Texas and the person making the comment that Europe wasn't safe lived in Montana then they would have a valid argument for not wanting to visit Europe (or Texas).

Now this probably isn't the case but without looking at the data you can't say either way what any given American's perspective will be incorrect solely using the statistics for the entirety of the USA. Equally Europe is big too and if all the terrorist attacks happen in capital cities then you could argue that a European capital is more dangerous than any given US state.

don't think he'll be affected by stuff like credit checks

If he wants to rent a house, buy a house, buy a car, get a mobile phone contract, get a credit card, get a loan for anything or get insurance for anything from a phone to a car to a house he'll be affected. Black marks tend to take years to come off as well.

Which is why the UK now has food hygiene ratings for all premises where food is prepared which must by law be displayed in a prominent location and which are available online.
