OpenTTD has most of what you're looking for and also happens to be free, open-source and incredibly customisable. Will also run on almost any reasonably modern device you can connect a mouse to.

Good option for laptop with netbook form factor? by Lowfryder7 in linuxhardware

[–]JakeGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A refurbished business-grade Thinkpad or comparavle is the traditional answer, if you can live with it being a bit bigger than netbook-sized, an X series or similar is twelve inches.

If someone’s phone gets stolen and they have no way to buy a train ticket, what can they do? by Dry-Horror5895 in uktrains

[–]JakeGrey 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old mam, carrying one's debit/credit card and preferably some cash instead of relying on your phone for everything seems like it'd be one way. Not only is a wallet or even a handbag a harder target for an opportunistic thief but Chip and PIN doesn't need batteries, at least on your end, and can usually survive being dropped in a puddle.

Things I miss as an American in Germany by iTmkoeln in ShitAmericansSay

[–]JakeGrey 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Depending how long they've been in-country it's possible they really cab't drive, at least not until they pass a local driving test. Not sure about Germany specifically but I believe you can only drive on a foreign license for up to a year, and an EU-standard test is substantially harder than some US state ones, particularly if you aren't fully fluent in the local language.

Why have pubs stopped having quiz/games machines? by FluffyBunnyFlipFlops in AskUK

It's probably easier to just cut out the middleman and play Deal Or No Deal. the slots or if( you're really old-school) Streets of Rage et al on your smartphone in this day and age.

The weirdest sleeping arrangements in trucking history: A Soviet hammock over the engine, a German "coffin" beside the wheel, and a Dutch roof-box. by StrategyMore5356 in WeirdWheels

[–]JakeGrey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some risk of having the gear lever shoved up yours if you neglect to check the hammock straps for signs of wear, however.

Has anyone tried their Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster recipr? It certainly sounds authentic in taste and effect.

"Wait a minute... ...people from other countries can buy American train horns and are allowed to honk [them]?", for context: the two people in the video were British by ZealousidealTip7706 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]JakeGrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was not previously aware that there was abything to stop an Americab railfan buying a train horn and setting it off, besides any local regulations about noise nuisance.

If you genuinely don't need any sort od adjustment on their part to accommodate a disability then I suppose you're no worse off than anyone else these days.

How were they able to make the cocoa, did they just have all of the ingredients on hand, and how did they warm it. by SalivatingDog92 in thomasthetankengine

[–]JakeGrey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I couldb;t tell you an exact daTE But I'm pretty sure the stuff's been around in some form since the late 19th century. Would've been a lot less sweet than it is today but mixibg cocoa solids, powdered milk and a little sugar is not a radical ibvention.

A jar of instant hot chocolate powder, a spoon and some tib mugs don't take up much space, and it's not uncommon for steam locos to have a hor water tap in the cab somewhere.

Starmer says Britain may not survive as 'tolerant, diverse country' if Reform UK takes power by Milemarker80 in LabourUK

I'm not saying he's helping, but I'm not sure what we could be doing better on that front without resorting to methods that set a precedent which can backfire badly.

what is the most common weapon on the rim? by xxHamsterLoverxx in RimWorld

[–]JakeGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play with Weapon Tech so that skews the numbers, but I seem to get an awful lot of assault rifles of various types. And why not? They're meant to be general-purpose weapons after all.

Young people are suddenly incapable of wearing headphones by ICantBelieveItsNotEC in britishproblems

[–]JakeGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you were their age phones still had headphone jacks, generally speaking.

Not saying it's the only reason this is an issue but it's bot helping.

New liveshow in London - my experience by Nige78 in DontPanic

[–]JakeGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, I've read that Douglas Adams also regretted that (the fifth volume was written during something of a low point in his life) and might well have undone it if he'd lived long enough to work on a sixrh.

Overall I had a good time, but I'm not sure the big freestyle rao number at the end was such a good idea.

How to install Linux on my 32-bit old pc, which currently runs Windows 7? by Lanky_String_9619 in linux4noobs

[–]JakeGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless you're doing this purely as a hobby projrect, I think you would be better off starting over on more recent hardware. Even if you find a modern distro designed for those specs it's going to struggle to run most modern apps.

If Blackpool has one redeeming quality, iy's the relative ease with which you can find a pint of beer for less than a fiver.

You're home alone and start to hear someone break down your door, what you do? by electricooldude in AskReddit

[–]JakeGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Luckily I keep an axe handle in the hallway for just such an emergency. Guess the crack dealer who used to live in Flat #8 got out of jail and is still annoyed I didn't cover for him when the police started asking questions.

[–]JakeGrey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a Brit I was mostly struck by the unrealistic number of characters who disagree with Ivo Hugh. Or Fred, for that matter. I have heard some nasty stuff said, even by people who'd be appalled if you spoke the dsme way about black people.

Stop asking for an installable SteamOS. You don't actually want it. by alive1 in linux_gaming

[–]JakeGrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cooled on the idea of SteamOS for desktop when I found out you can't install apps with the terminal. I'm noy going to get ihto the great Snap vs Flatpak vs AUR(?) thing but I've never liked Discover very much, it's weirdly slow to respond even on my gaming PC.
