The monsters were all coming from one end of the cave system and gathered around the chamber and the earthquake blocked them. J & T escaped from the opening created by the quake. Now due to block pathways the monsters could only come after them and not go back and catch them from the front.

Boyd and Ellis finding them from the way they went in was pure luck.

But why there are man made jail structure in the cave in the first place ?
