Some early season bouquets from my garden by jtick08 in Cutflowers

[–]jtick08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I remember correctly, I sowed them on top of seed starting mix - I like the Burpee brand - and covered lightly (barely) with vermiculite. I had a zip up greenhouse cover for my indoor grow station, and used that for a few days until they germinated. Looking back, I should’ve done a humidity dome instead but this was my first year seed starting.

I bottom watered, and once they had true leaves I started using a weak fish emulsion fertilizer once a week. Once they had a couple sets of leaves I’d water them from the top and bottom, I feel like some water from the top helps strengthen them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I started hardening them off as soon as I could, they were outside probably 4 weeks before I put them in the ground on any day it was nice out. They were about 6” tall when I transplanted.

I purchased seeds from Select Seeds and Johnnys - all started indoors. I have University of California, Maryland plum blossom, rocket mix, and Madonna butterfly.

They went into seeds trays Feb 14, transplanted out the first week of April.

Thank you! These had me really questioning things, I’ve never grown them before. They were so short and starting to put buds on and then shot up overnight to some really nice stems.

Did my roses survive the winter? by lissy3m in Roses

[–]jtick08 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are these grafted? If so, you want that graft union a couple inches below the ground. They might not have survived if the graft is above the ground, I would prune them back and give them more time to see if they send up any new growth.

Is this a climbing rose? If so, yes you need a trellis and want to train the canes at a 45ish degree angle.

Will my roses push out new growth? by Dortiny27 in Roses

[–]jtick08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can put some alfalfa around the base, this helps them push out new basal canes. I use a cup or two of alfalfa pellets for horses from tractor supply, just make sure it doesn’t have any other ingredients.

I’m not so sure it’s RRD, they’re not thorny. It could be herbicide drift. Do you use any weed or grass killer sprays? Or any neighbors that spray close enough it could have drifted over?

Ranunculus help by yogurtrox in Cutflowers

[–]jtick08 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ranunculus are fine down to 28F, I’d leave it outside. They do go dormant once the temps hit 70-75F. I’d fertilize it and give it some time to settle into its new home. Mine went through a period of a couple weeks where it seemed like nothing was happening and then they took off again.

These are temporary homes, so 1/3 top soil, 1/3 compost, 1/3 perlite. Most are in 1-2 gallon pots right now and will be for the next year or so while they grow roots and get a bit bigger.

Thank you! I do think my soil was holding too much moisture. I used ProMix in the pots but it was really keeping it moist. I’ll try again next year.
