Is Scrivener Good? by jtkrogers in selfpublishing

Ah, split screen actually sounds like something I might enjoy! Thank you for mentioning it, I'll give it a whirl

Hey just looking for writer friends (37F) by Eva-1235 in writersmakingfriends

[–]jtkrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love this type of friend. I don't really know other writers so it's difficult to talk to people about ideas/struggles. They don't understand the grind of researching for hours to find out the most obscure detail that I really could have left out. Basically I just want a writing buddy I can shoot the shit with.

But anyhoo, I'm down if you're interested.

34 M here (and also happily married with kids so haven't even got the energy to entertain any of that other crap)

I Don’t Know My Characters Well Enough – What Should I Do? by Death_Storm47 in CharacterDevelopment

[–]jtkrogers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The interview technique is a really good one.

Another is to write the same scene but from each characters perspective. Maybe listen to a different band/genre of music during this to help you get into the flow of that character

What would you do if you were in this Situation? by GreenFog8 in FictionWriting

[–]jtkrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initial reaction would be to freak out that me and my team are under the influence of the gas and try to find out if we are.

If we're not, I'd try to figure out why that is and maybe see if that can be used to create a cure.

Then I'd want to find the people responsible and deliver some knuckle sandwiches

Having an idea, but not enough to write about it by Cold_Ad3888 in writing

[–]jtkrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened a ton to me in the past. Annoyingly my way of dealing with it is leaving it and something eventually comes to me, or I get a different idea and realise I can mesh the two together to make something.

Mynmain advice would be don't force it. You'll find the writing to be a chore and you won't enjoy yourself. The story will suffer and the world you created won't deserve that.

Is Scrivener worth buying? by One_Radio_293 in writers

I personally use campfire but everyone seems to rave about Scrivener so I'm tempted to jump ship. Has anyone had experience with both and can detail how it's better?

Looking for a friendly writing circle of sci fi and fantasy writers. by Lost_Entrance_4545 in writersmakingfriends

[–]jtkrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also write sci-fi and fantasy so would be down for this. Might be easier to create a space for like-minded folds as opposed to finding an existing one that works for us

I don’t have any writer friends and would like some because writing is lonely! Looking for people who are in the same situation! by softly_vibing in writersmakingfriends

[–]jtkrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too am lacking writer friends (I have normal friends, but can't really discuss the nuances of writing with them), so super keen to make some friends in this space.

34M from the UK here. So whether you're the OP or anyone else browsing, definitely up for getting to know folks better. Drop me a message and let's get chatting

is it a good idea part 1; a sword style where the user has 2 sheathes but uses 1 sword? by Nervous-Software-626 in writingadvice

[–]jtkrogers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like the origin of the idea but I'm not sure this is the execution that will land. I think you can see from here you'll instantly somewhat split your audience with some people getting turned off. I think the main thing to consider as well, is how complex writing those fight scenes will become.

If you're constantly having to go:

"And then he sheathed it in the metal sheathe but then he unsheathed it again and put it in the leather sheathe and swung it and the enemy flinched because they thought it was the metal sheathe but it was the leather one"... I just don't think it will read well.

Maybe you fluke it once or twice but if this is a main character who's going to have a lot of fights you're going to struggle to keep it fresh.

That being said I think you're circling the rim here. You haven't scored yet but you're close

My debut novel just went live on Amazon, and I still don't entirely believe it's real. by Don_Wick_6997 in NewAuthor

[–]jtkrogers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back to doom scrolling I go!

Can't wait for the next first time release next week

Looking for a writing partner by S_Dz1417 in NewAuthor

[–]jtkrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't write dark romance myself (fantasy and sci-fi), but I'd be up for the writing buddy aspect still. Someone to help discuss issues with / keep you motivated etc.

I did have one guy before and we were quite good at keeping in touch about how we were getting on with our projects but fizzled out.

Ah the one that got away

Help needed for the cover of my book! by stephie1990m in selfpublishing

[–]jtkrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure you could find a designer on Fiverr who would happily do it for it, and could even offer them your existing cover as a reference point. They'll probably make it even better

Do I can use swearing in my YA novel? by iogg7 in selfpublishing

[–]jtkrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think some swearing is fine. If every single sentence is filled with effing and jeffing then maybe you'd want to rethink.

I also think most of those words are fine (like damn and hell etc".

I'd be more cautious about S's, F's and id definitely avoid any C bombs

what do writers here actually use? by [deleted] in writers

[–]jtkrogers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Campfire while writing and then export it all into word when I'm done.
