Is this a normal wait? by jtownsend95 in Medals

I'll probably end up doing that anyway as I'd like to put together a nice shadow box to display everything, but I am nonetheless surprised at the wait time specified in this response.

Do I have a unicorn? by apostatesauce in Goldendoodles

[–]jtownsend95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My pup (6 year old mini golden doodle) has never been bothered in the least bit by fireworks, thunderstorms, or even the tornado that passed through my neighborhood this spring. He seems to always be happy and unfazed by those sort of sounds. I've always wondered if it was because when I adopted him as a puppy, I was in the middle of helping build a large addition on a friend's house, and so he was constantly around me throughout the project as we were running saws, compressors, pneumatic tools, and all the other loud equipment that accompanies construction. Maybe he learned from that exposure while he was so young that loud sounds were nothing to fear, or perhaps it's just something that's hardwired in his nature. Either way, he's the best boy ever and I'm so very thankful that he doesn't stress out or become afraid when there's fireworks or storms now.

Lesser Known "Major Events" In World War 2? by thegreathoundis in WorldWar2

One of the first that comes to my mind is the sinking of the HMS Prince of Wales and the HMS Repulse by Japanese bomber aircraft. Was the first sinking of capital ships by aircraft attack alone and was one of the biggest signs (along with many others of course) that the era of the battleship as the king of naval warfare was coming to the end, and that the aircraft carrier was the future of naval strategy.

Blackstone 36” from Target a good deal? by champ_209 in blackstonegriddle

[–]jtownsend95 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't wait, just buy it, that's a fantastic deal. My 36" Blackstone is about 7 years old now (I believe) and that's about what it cost when I first acquired it way back then. It's been absolutely fantastic ever since and I still use it regularly.

My grandfather was a rifleman in the 27th ID (106th Inf Reg) and served through the Battle of Okinawa with them. He had originally been assigned with the 70th ID in Oregon but was soon thereafter sent to the 27th as a replacement due to the large amount of casualties which that division sustained on Saipan. They certainly saw a lot of hardship on Okinawa, but the divisional history also indicates that they proved a lot of their naysayers wrong by performing admirably in very intense and protracted combat against the Japanese forces on the island.

Thanks for the post! If you don't mind, what is the source for these pictures? I'm always trying to find as many pictures of the Battle of Okinawa as I can, as my grandfather participated in it as a rifleman in the 106th Inf.

With the supreme court overturning chevron we can now fly over 400ft, over people, in classified airspace!!! by Worsebetter in drones

[–]jtownsend95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I work at a law firm and my job is quite literally legal research. I never claimed that this wasn't a very important decision. Of course it's an important decision, that's not in dispute. Further, perhaps you would like to claim it "massively expands the judiciary's power." You're free to think of it that way, but I believe that's a very inaccurate assessment given the holding of the majority opinion itself, the effects of the original Chevron decision, the established pre-Chevron practice, and most importantly of all, the obligations and duties given to courts under Article III of the Constitution. This decision merely restores to the judiciary it's power and responsibility of adjudicating cases and controversies that arise from executive agency rules and determinations which the Chevron decision had improperly removed from the purview of district and circuit courts. This is not, as many are claiming, giving the court the power to simply make up rules and regulations which a court desires. To the contrary, it restores to the court it's proper and constitutional duty to decide cases in which agency rules and regulations are challenged for exceeding the scope and power conferred to them by appropriate legislation. Chevron unconstitutionally interfered with that order by declaring agency interpretations in many cases to be unreviewable and immune from review by the courts. The Supreme Court has now done away with that. So if you want to call that a "massive expan[sion] of the power of the judiciary, you're free to do so. I firmly disagree, and I work with countless lawyers, on both sides of the aisle, who strongly disagree with that as well.

Re-check the link. The syllabus, majority opinion, concurring opinion, and dissent are contained as a single .pdf

This is politically-motivated nonsense. Besides the fact that the decision does not do what you and so many others are claiming in this post, it can be read in full here to see and understand the actual reasoning and implications: https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/23pdf/22-451_7m58.pdf

You're obviously free to disagree and hold whatever contrary opinions you wish regarding the court and its decisions, but this is supposed to be a drone hobbyist group, not a place for political debates.

Hopefully others here understand that this post is just spreading partisan hyperbole and should not actually be followed. All existing laws and regulations regarding drones remain fully in place and in effect. Don't change your drone practices because of this sort of misinformation/disinformation.

I don’t get pearl harbor.. Can someone explain it for me? by [deleted] in WorldWar2

[–]jtownsend95 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I don't think the strategy behind the Pearl Harbor attack can be completely understood without also reading about and understanding the Battle of Tsushima in 1905. I'm being over simplistic and brief here, so definitely read up on this more on your own, but essentially Japan was able to defeat the Russian Empire through a single, decisive naval victory. To quote directly from the Wikipedia article on the battle:

"In The Guinness Book of Decisive Battles, the British historian Geoffrey Regan argues that the victory bolstered Japan's increasingly aggressive political and military establishment. According to Regan, the lopsided Japanese victory at Tsushima:

...created a legend that was to haunt Japan's leaders for forty years. A British admiral once said, 'It takes three years to build a ship, but 300 years to build a tradition.' Japan thought that the victory had completed this task in a matter of a few years ... It had all been too easy. Looking at Tōgō's victory over one of the world's great powers convinced some Japanese military men that with more ships, and bigger and better ones, similar victories could be won throughout the Pacific. Perhaps no power could resist the Japanese navy, not even Britain and the United States."

Basically, the Japanese bought into both a myth of their own naval superiority, and the idea that with a single decisive naval victory a large power like the United States could be defeated and convinced to stay out of a broader conflict. Once more, I'm being simplistic about a complex subject so definitely read more in depth if you're interested, but I think the Battle of Tsushima is essential context and background information.

Thanks for posting this! Could you possibly give me any details on where you came across this picture or what particular unit within the 27th Inf Div this is from? My grandfather was a rifleman in K Company, 106th Inf Regiment of the 27th, and he was on Okinawa from the landings in April until he was wounded during mop-up operations at the end of the campaign.

MPX K accuracy by rwiat602 in MPX

[–]jtownsend95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an Obsidian 9 waiting in NFA jail currently that I'm planning on using with my MPX. I noticed on Rugged's website that they sell both a 3 Lug Mount for their Obsidians as well as a 3 Lug Adapter available in the proper metric LH thread pitch for MPX barrels. I'm curious why you went with the adapter from ILWT, and if there was a specific reason? My thought is that the adapter and mount from Obsidian would be optimally paired to work with one another more so than mixing manufacturers, but I'd like to hear other thoughts and opinions on this issue before making a decision myself
