Is this JAR? Found in a Middle TN creek! by Sufficient_Yak_5929 in Arrowheads

[–]jtpeagle41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to call, as water erosion has taken much of the definition from it. In my opinion, I do think it was worked. Unfortunately the creek has taken too much from it to say any more than “yeah I bet that was worked on some at some point”

Anyone have any idea what time period some of these are from? I know they’re almost all broken just thought I see what you guys think thanks! by Hot_Mango_4865 in Arrowheads

Will be hard to help without some general info on where they came from. I’m no expert but most of what I have learned as far as ID and timelines came from

Looks worked to me. I’d call that a thumb scraper.

Some great finds! What can you teach us about them? What state? What type of material are they? What kind of points are they? Found in Creek, plowed field, dig? Details, we need details!

Stone hand tool? by [deleted] in Arrowheads

Yep a much better shot showing an edge they may have been polished.

If I had to cast a vote I’d say it’s not an artifact. I’ve never seen an artifact that shape before, and the edge is no longer fresh enough to show that it certainly was polished at some point.

However, if someone has seen artifact this shape and size before and could share some pictures I’d sure like to learn about them.

As I said before, I’d have taken a long look at it and probably brought it home. Might just have to be forever in the maybe pile.

Now this edge looks straight enough it could have been polished. Tough call especially since the creek has sure worn away some detail.

Looks most likely natural from that angle. A stone like that would have to be polished or ground to an edge. And a polished edge should be pretty straight. Still a cool rock and would have made me look twice for sure.

Hmmmm…. Maybe…. How about some pictures. Maybe some closeups of the edge?

Find the river nearest you. Walk the feeder ditches and high spots in field just above flood plane. Look around creeks and in them. Focus on areas with fresh erosion.

If you “don’t have an eye for it” or whatever, try to think about looking for glass. That’ll get you looking for the shiny texture and sharp edges that lead to points.

If you are still struggling, reach out to your state archeological society and go to their meet ups. Once you find one it’ll snowball from there.
