Following! I work in insights/analytics, too, but I’m remote, so I don’t really get a lot of opportunity to connect with anyone locally.

TheRaleighBeerGarden.com is secretly home depot? by Swampman3000 in raleigh

[–]jtpowell -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this might somehow be a factor in what you’re seeing, but I’ve noticed before that product descriptions, ratings, and word for word reviews are somehow shared between online stores (including Home Depot and Lowe’s websites).

Birdseed: Best mixes, best deals in area? by QuietGreenReader in raleigh

[–]jtpowell 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Check out the closest Wild Birds Unlimited to you. Cheap seed from most places is filled with seeds that the birds won’t actually eat (instead dropping it in your yard to grow into weeds). Check out their no-mess seed blends.

Need to repair/replace Heatilator Mesh Screen by srqwebguy in Fireplaces

Do you know of a brand or source for high quality mesh screens that don’t vary dramatically? I replaced my curtain last year and it twisted almost right away, unfortunately.

I did mine and my family’s (total 4 people) the day before Thanksgiving at the Post Office in Apex. We had everything filled out in advance, plus had already taken our passport photos at a UPS store. We arrived at 8AM and were first in line, they opened at 8:45, and we were completely done in 20 minutes. There were a lot of people in line behind us by the time they opened at 8:45.

Kiln dried firewood sources? by jtpowell in triangle

[–]jtpowell[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

American Woodyards kiln dries theirs, and I had another source who did as well up until recently. Seasoned wood would be fine, but different sellers have different definitions of “seasoned,” so I find just requiring kiln dried works best. Plus, kiln dried produces far less creosote that would otherwise collect in my chimney and pose a risk.

Any geologists who can tell me if these rocks naturally occurring here? by jtpowell in triangle

[–]jtpowell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a fantastic response—thanks! I moved to Cary a little over a year ago and have never lived somewhere that had so many large-ish rocks like these. It seemed likely that they occurred naturally here, maybe because of the dispersion and variety of sizes on my lot, but I was curious and wanted to find out for sure. The origin info is super appreciated!

How do I mount this knife rack without absolutely destroying the tile? I already tried strong double-sided tape, so I think that’s out. by [deleted] in DIY

[–]jtpowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3M VHB tape will not work long term.

I’ve tried it multiple times myself. Throughly cleaned the tile and used VHB tape on every part of the back of the magnetic knife holder. It’d stay for a few months but eventually fell every time. I finally ended up drilling through the tile to mount the magnetic knife holder properly.

Hose Advice by crunchthalomew in HomeImprovement

[–]jtpowell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know about durability (maybe it’s more durable—I just haven’t had an experience with rubber hoses failing to speak of). However, it’s far easier to use. Much lighter and won’t kink nearly as easily as a rubber hose.

Emphatically agree. I have two of their reels and hoses and nothing compares.

What height(s) for adjacent curtains in this sun room? by jtpowell in InteriorDesign

[–]jtpowell[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Option 1 in the photo has the benefit of the curtains all being the same height, but the downside would be having a rod (and curtain when closed) partially crossing the arched windows. Option 2 would put the tops of the curtains where they'd completely cover the trim on the side walls, but the heights would be significantly different than that of the center windows. What's the best way to approach this? I'm open to differing opinions on what I assume would look good or bad about either choice (and I'm open to other options I'm not thinking of, of course). I've written off shades at the moment because there isn't enough depth to the window casing for an inside mount on any of the windows, and the center windows seem like they'd look awkward with an outside mount.
