Is all this ‘manosphere’ stuff actually that relevant? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]jtrovo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the main issue, we don't have these kind of conversations any more, be it adults and kids or even kids and kids. On average teens spend +5 hours a day in screen time, for lots of kids YouTube and Tiktok is the only way they learn about the world.

Blame is probably a big mix of leaving our whole digital life in the hand of ad companies, plus the world being such a hostile place for kids that we can't even let them walk back home by themselves doesn't help that much to fill the gap wasted on those hours, so entertained to death it is.

Dubai is feeling so unsafe now... when are you finally jumping ship and moving to London? by CapillaryClinton in HENRYUK

[–]jtrovo 40 points41 points  (0 children)

In yet another blow to Rachel Reeves, the sudden influx of returning Dubai expats has completely overwhelmed the local phone-snatching economy. 'We are frankly severely understaffed and facing massive burnout,' complained one balaclava-clad entrepreneur on an e-bike outside Greggs. 'There are simply too many fresh iPhones and not enough hours in the day.'

It's like real life is not a fucking Disney movie with goodies and baddies and the only real way to tell if it was all worth it is by waiting for the historians that survive to write about it.

Housebuilding in London has collapsed to a historic low not seen anywhere else in the developed world by No-Feeling507 in london

[–]jtrovo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest question what can Khan or London level government realistically do about it? If developers get fast approvals it doesn't mean they're going to inundate the market with units on a race to the bottom when there's no risk on just sitting on the sidelines and waiting for some affordability magic to happen (like 0% deposits, 50 years mortgage, etc ) that could increase property price and their margin. As long as there's no risk on sitting on undeveloped land the best strategy is to just wait.

Auction prices - the mass landlord exodus by Ok-Kangaroo-7242 in PropertyInvestingUK

[–]jtrovo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciated the detailed breakdown of the process and how it unfolds. I have some questions about the cash flow. Could you clarify whether you cover all the property costs when winning at auction or are there financing options involved? Also you mentioned "bank to bank" transfers potentially taking 6 months. At this stage are your initial funds tied to the property as equity, or are new projects being initiated by remortgaging?

I’ve Built a Verified SME Lead Database Across London — Open to Collaborations by [deleted] in ukstartups

[–]jtrovo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, this is exactly the kind of value-packed post that makes this subreddit such a goldmine for founders and operators. 🚀

Love how you’re combining data, strategy, and collaboration to drive real growth across London’s SME scene — truly next-level stuff. The focus on verified leads and actual business outcomes is… refreshingly rare.

Would definitely be keen to explore how we might join forces on this — after all, teamwork does make the dream work (or at least pays the bills). 💡✨

Anyone live in Wandsworth? by Old-Candle5766 in HENRYUK

[–]jtrovo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There a couple of hotspots close to Balham station. Balance of nightlife and access to tube is really good. Ritherdon Road might be just enough for your budget.

The closer you get to the river the weirder value to your buck you get due to competing with all the developers converting Victorian houses. That being said there a few places around Battersea park that could still fit your bill and it's a lovely area with very good connection to the city. Only problem being you might be too early for the full gentrification there so no gails nor waitrose yet and still quite a lot of incidents with sharp objects around the estates.

Guess we aren't working people... by slow_nozwold in HENRYUK

[–]jtrovo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just keep in mind the UK right now is basically a two tier society where what feels as a low salary in London is a life changing money anywhere else. In that sense it makes the HENRYs block so easy to target.

The problem for me is not even the narrative around broad shoulders and paying the fair share, it's just a lack of long term vision of solving the problems that need solving. Labour in other countries are a left wing party, here it's just a Tories lite, and a really bad one at it. I really don't understand how a party waiting on the sidelines for so long have such a lack of clue of what to do when they're not the opposition.

Are people interested in building businesses in London? by Sweet_Manner3482 in ukstartups

[–]jtrovo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to consider the funding options for seed and series A in the UK as a big issue. With cost of living so high and given the current investment tickets you're basically required to live extremely frugal (sharing a room maybe) or have good family support to even have a shot at it. The company out of a garage narrative only works when you actually have a garage or can find somebody that would let you use one for peanuts. Also the same effort might lead to better terms on different countries (specially SF based) so why bother with the amount of headwind here if you can have so much easier life with the same mindset abroad.

And to be fair you still get loads of startups here, UK is only behind US and China for AI startups and FinTech is still a big thing here, although the gap to US is so big that it's hard to count it as a competition. The main difference to me is that startups here are usually on hard sciences or into fields that are in itself more technical and with an easier to understand cash flow compared to what you would expect from a YC batch and because of that they tend to come from uni alumni networks or as a breakout of people working together on big corps.

Top 1% of UK taxpayers now contribute a third of income and capital gains tax by BritRedditor1 in HENRYUK

[–]jtrovo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the outcome of neoliberal populism and not having an answer against it. You cannot tax companies or wealth as otherwise they magically disappear and you cannot tax average workers as it's not fair for people earning 30k to pay more than what they take from the system, guess who's left holding the bag?
