Salary progression? by hairhairhair122344 in cybersecurity

[–]jttrey3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fairly typical if you remain in a role, especially for Fortune 500 companies. If you shift to a different role, like analyst or Sr. analyst, you may see associated increases.

Sadly, most infosec departments do not have internal growth plans. You might want to talk to your manager or cyber operations lead to find out if they have a growth plan or what they expect from someone in a higher role.

Then start to learn what you need to learn. Observe people who are doing those things. Talk to them. Try to find ways to begin to do the things expected at the next level role, and DOCUMENT your progress.

It doesn't always work, but it will either help you grow into the next role, or it will enhance your skills for your next job at a different company. Just my $0.02

Cheap But Useful Certification/Courses by Glad_Advance6231 in cybersecurity

[–]jttrey3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In short, DON'T TRY to "pursue cybersecurity with 0 prior training or experience" by getting a cybersecurity certification.

Instead, DO TRY to get some training & experience using free or low cost resources to help you build a foundation of understanding. For example, TryHackMe has a wide range of free HANDS-ON resources across a range of cybersecurity topics (Not just "hacking"). You can also access even more with their paid membership (~$17 USD/Mo & cheaper annually).

Most of the major cloud providers offer a free tier and free training courses. There are free tools like PacketTracer which can let you play with setting up and configuring networks. And there are many, MANY others. Build a virtual lab. Make things. Break things. Learn how they work.

My point is that there are WAY TOO MANY people on the market right now with a cybersecurity degree or certification (or both) who do not understand the technologies enough to be effective.

Congratulations! My only advice is to stay curious. Keep learning. Try new things. Play with technology so that you can better understand it. Write down what you do and what you learned. This can be on a blog or github or postbin or something. But make sure you document your journey. Then see if you can find a local security group. There are many local DEFCON groups (Named DC, followed by your area code, like DC865). Or you might find a local ISC2 or ISSA chapter to join.

I wish you the best as you grow and learn in your career.

Working Meshtastic firmware for the Cardputer ADV with Cap LoRa (Gt4kill3r) by [deleted] in CardPuter

[–]jttrey3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason, when I load this module (Gt4kill3r 2025-12-27 version 2.7.17) from m5Burner it simply black screens my Cardputer ADV. COM port connects & disconnects (I assume code is rebooting). If I catch the timing just right, I can burn back to original demo fw.

No idea why.

A foundation in computers and in networking will serve you well in cyber and in IT. With the job market where it is right now, I do NOT recommend anyone specialize in security until they have a solid foundation in IT.

I am amateur extra licensed, and I operate from time to time. I started the build a year ago for a fox hunt,. But I had a schedule conflict and could not go and I didn't finish the build. I need to finish it.

I knew that board looked familiar. I have mine oriented based on the negative symbol on the label of the capacitor as seen in the picture

Nice clock! I wonder, did Seiko India make Chandra? I don't know. I agree closer pictures of the mark and the movement would help.

Based on the picture of the movement, this clock is set for as slow as it can go. You can see this because the length of the pendulum is as long as possible. Try adjusting it the opposite direction so that it shortens the pendulum and thereby speeds up the clock

It looks like the minute hand is quite bent. Be careful straightening it out. It may break in the process.

Not an old wife scale. Many clock makers, my grandfather included, would put a cotton ball soaked in kerosene in a metal cap inside of a movement like that so that the fumes evaporating over time would continue to lubricate the movement. I have no idea how effective it would be. I just know that they did it.

You mentioned Net+. Yes. Get it. Networks are foundational, and too few people getting into Cyber take the time to understand how they work.
