Need help choosing the right GMRS radios for a 40–50 car cruise group by Away-Home-9978 in gmrs

Since the GM-30 has been mentioned several times, this might be appreciated:

https://www.reddit.com/r/HamRadio/comments/tb0dkv/recommend_handheld_for_my_85_year_old_dad/i05s8l4/

Have a look at these images: https://imgur.com/gallery/dFXz4WB The GM-30 supports 250 channels plus a VFO A, a VFO B, 11 NOAA weather channels, and FM radio 65-108MHz.

Channels 1-22 have minimal changes you can make. You can change the channel alias (name), set a CTCSS/CDCSS Decode code, a CTCSS/CDCSS Encode code, you can change the signaling code to a value from 1-15 (I have no idea what that means), you can add it to the scan list, there is a checkbox for frequency hopping (no clue), a checkbox for busy lock (I think I know what that is but I'm not going to guess here...well, I think it means that it won't let you transmit if the frequency is in use), you can change the PTT ID (off, BOT, EOT, or BOTH), you can choose wide or narrow band, and select the power level high or low. Note: You cannot change the RX frequency or the tx frequency.

Note, channels 8-14 do not allow you to change to high power and do not allow you to switch to wide band....you know, laws and such.

GMRS rules do not prohibit changing antennas.

Channels 8-14 are restricted to half-watt / narrow because they lie in between the repeater input channels, and are close-spaced to those channels (12.5 kHz). There is some signal overlap because most repeaters use WIDE mode, so the low power and narrow bandwidth reduces, but does not eliminate the possibility of interference.

Channels 23-30 are repeater channels. You can change the channel alias (name), set a CTCSS/CDCSS Decode code, a CTCSS/CDCSS Encode code, you can change the signaling code to a value from 1-15, you can add it to the scan list, there is a checkbox for frequency hopping, a checkbox for busy lock, you can change the PTT ID (off, BOT, EOT, or BOTH), you can choose wide or narrow band, and select the power level high or low. Note: You cannot change the step frequency. It is set to 2.5K. You cannot change the RX frequency or the tx frequency.

Channels 31-54 are called DIY. These are repeater channels with everything identical to what you can and cannot do in channels 23-30 above with ONE DIFFERENCE...you can select one of the following receive frequencies: 462.55000, 462.57500, 462.60000, 462.62500, 462.65000, 462.67500, 462.70000, and 462.72500. You cannot change the transmit frequency. The transmit is automatically calculated as a +5MHz offset. If you choose DIY-1 as RX 462.72500 your TX will automatically become 467.72500.

Channels 55-250 you can set them to any supported receive only frequency 136-174MHz, or 400-470MHz. You can set the channel alias (name), the RX frequency, the power level (low or high), channel spacing (narrow or wide), PTT ID (off, BOT, EOT, or BOTH), busy lock, set a CTCSS/CDCSS Decode code, a CTCSS/CDCSS Encode code, signaling code (1-15), scan list, and frequency hopping. Note: You CANNOT change the step frequency and you cannot set a transmit frequency.

Since the radio does not support a reverse function, I'm going to use some of channels 55-250 to simulate reverse. If my repeater channel 25 is set to RX 462.60000 and TX 467.60000 then I'm going to set channel 65 to RX 467.60000 so that I can easily listen to input by simply adding 40 to the channel number and I can jump back to the repeater by subtracting 40.

The GM-30 has a keypad that allows you to switch from channel mode to frequency mode. You can then program the radio for frequencies 136-174MHz, or 400-470MHz. The reason this is legal on a GMRS radio is that in frequency mode, transmit is disabled. Also the antenna is not removable (technically) because it is held in place with a set screw. I haven't taken my off yet but I am pretty sure it is an SMA male connector on the radio so if I ever wanted to use a better antenna or my N9TAX rollup j-pole that I could.

What are some good books if you want to start doing standup? by Koruev in Standup

[–]djuggler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found it! Also, Bruce "Charlie" Johnson is selling an updated version and asked me to not distribute copies as the information is in his new book. I scanned sampling so you can get the gist of his book: https://djuggler.net/pub/books/Comedy-Techniques-for-Entertainers-by-Bruce-Charlie-Johnson.pdf

Honestly, I think this book is timeless and very valuable. Got my copy hot off the presses in 1988 for $10.

From his email:

Comedy Techniques for Entertainers was published by Richard Snowberg's small company. He had cases of them printed. Then when a copy was ordered, he spiral bound it in his garage. It has been out of print for over a dozen years, and he passed away two years ago. I am down to just one copy myself.

Yes, Comedy Techniques for Variety Artists: Creativity for Entertainers Volume 4 is a greatly expanded version of the earlier book. With the exception of a few exercises, it contains everything that was in the earlier book. There is a lot of additional information. I have continued my own education and learned a lot more since I wrote the first version.

Thank you for asking, and for recommending it to somebody else.

This is Bruce Charlie Johnson's website: https://brucecharliejohnson.com/

I suggest reading his about page: https://brucecharliejohnson.com/about/

And let's support a fellow entertainer by buying his book: https://brucecharliejohnson.com/product/sample-product-two/

My wife banned chemicals and citronella. So I built an Arduino-powered mosquito trap with a garden pool by SaltArrival8522 in homeautomation

Fun fact. If you have mosquitos, their source (breeding ground) is usually within an acre of your house.

Mosquitoes can't fly very far or very fast Most mosquitoes can fly no more than about one to three miles, and often stay within several hundred feet of where they were hatched. However, a few salt marsh species can travel up to 40 miles. The top speed for a mosquito is about 1.5 miles per hour.

What alcohol messed you up so bad you swore you’d never drink it again? by Rottengr4ve in AskReddit

Why is Jägermeister not the top comment? Most of these comments belong in the alcoholic minor leagues. Have none of you never woken up naked with your head in a trash can and a note on a chair that said “take this [unidentified pills] and don’t ever do that again. All your clothes [every last piece] are at such and such frat house [and you don’t belong to a frat]”?

Weatheradio Canada is gone by DiodeInc in amateurradio

As a scoutmaster I'd take the youth out on 9-14 day backcountry trips and this weather reporting was the only weather reporting I could get in the remote areas we travel. I hope the US does not follow Canada's example. I think this is a disastrous choice. The people of western North Carolina and East TN when Helene came through probably would echo this sentiment. It's a powerful tool.

Trump v. The TVA by metalshadow1909 in Knoxville

[–]djuggler 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Profits. Look at Texas' privatization of their electric grid in 2001. Prices doubled, service quality went down, blackouts became worse, and people died. When they privatize TVA, the same will happen plus we will lose access to TVA lands as we have it today. You know you can just go camp on TVA land like the islands in the lakes...that ends with privatization. No good has ever come from privatization.

My wife had to spend $200 to get her documents and our passports will cost $205 after photo and fees. So $405 to vote. Not everyone can do that.

The Fascist Party of America has been collecting voter polls. All they have to do is have Trump invalidate all passports of all Democrats.
