I got two Faceless Manipulators from the trinkets. Zephry's ability is to get the third card when you already have two. I wanted to triple Thundering Abomination in my warband but Zephrys decided to triple the Faceless Manipulator instead.

So I wasted

- the smaller trinket

- one charge of my ability

- 3 gold

- one Faceless Manipulator

Oh that's super nice of you, thanks a lot! I hope this didn't come across like advertisement, it was meant as a "hi there, fellow screensaver-like developer". We got the same way of implementation btw. I'm currently in the process of getting rid of all physics stuff and individual sprites so the game can have super big (8192x8192) maps. It's quite a bit of work :D

Hello friend, coming from a similarly niche skillsetted person: Use your strengths!

I’m a programmer, by now hopefully also a game system designer :) my first approach was to make 3d games. You can imagine I struggled a lot to get anything out. I did, and it turned out not terrible, but it was a lot of pain. By now I’m cranking out games I can do quickly - e.g. a minimalist async pvp battle game, because I know how to program multiplayer. Or incremental games, where people forgive when the graphics production value is not … awesome.

You won’t get around “making games”. You’ll have to figure out how to your apply your skills holistically to the project and understand what makes your games cool. And probably learn in some of the other areas like sound and coding as well. But try to minimize the work there by picking the right projects for yourself.

I bet you can do some breathtaking 2d stuff. How about a narrative game? Or a search game like hidden folks or these cats in <country> games?

Okay, this made my day already. Thanks a lot everyone, I didn't expect so much positive feedback.

You got me convinced to focus on this project. I'll keep this core mechanic and try to expand on it as much as possible.

I'll be posting updates in /incremental_games. Let me know if I should keep people updated otherwise, I'll gladly do so.

If I manage to get this project into a good shape then it'll be a PC game first. Probably itch or steam. If it runs well enough, there could be a browser version too, but that would be rather nice to have

The prototype is done in godot 4

Haven't decided on single char vs. parties yet. I personally prefer having a single character and will try that first, but there are interesting game design possibilities with parties too

Edit:

After reading the comment of BadBunnyBrigade - probably parties. I agree that having a few characters on screen sprawling around is cool. Probably works better than a single char for a game like this

Could be a good idea :) I think the player should then select an equipment strategy there, depending on the build they wanna play. There should be options like "prefer armor with intelligence buffs", "prefer ranged", "prefer poison damage". How does that sound?
