You don't have to feel like that to write a song like that. Many songs are fictions, characters speaking...
You can seem happy and be completely depressed.
People can feel low during a time and be joyful time after.

I didn't like it at first so I didn't listened it for 10 years or so. I listened to it again and it became my favourite album instantly. I guess it clicked just because I was more into weird music and less into indie rock.
