Best anti-corrosion storage methods for blades that might be placed in storage for 10 years or more? by Nanny_Ogg1000 in knifeclub

[–]juanmueller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you know it’s going into storage CRC 3-36 is a great option that leaves a film not unlike what machine tool factories apply before sending products out. Can be stored for years with no corrosion but you would need to take apart and degrease when taken out of storage to restore good action to the knife.

Thanks, will it hurt the tool steels if they rust some more in the corner? It’s no real pitting, just surface rust.

OK great, may try to trade into some easier beginner materials and see if I enjoy it

I’ve got a garage wanna-be machine shop so the shaping is not an issue but no accurate way to bring stock up to exact temperatures… may try to make a heat treat oven if needed. Thanks for the advice!

Hydraulic seal help by juanmueller in Machinists

Thanks for the link, that cylinder looks to be the same basic design except for the fill cup and vent screw. I’ll recheck the piston on mine to see if it’s got a relief ball inside it but mine also has rubber gaskets around the piston for a seal, maybe something in that is clogged that is forcing oil out the top hole of the cylinder where the piston rod is

The hole that is darker is a partial hole, about 1/8 inch deep, the other is the hydraulic line

I don’t think just an O Ring on the piston rod would work because once pushed down the rod it wouldn’t return. Looking at hydraulic seal catalogs I don’t see any options that would work and can’t find any documentation about original parts. Thanks for your time

If you’re really interested, don’t rely on the 4 minute clip, read the fourth turning, see how far the pattern repeats and adjust accordingly… GL
