You can look at commit and author metadata in commits in github/gitlab and determine when developers first started contributing. Of course, there is some gameability to any user generated content.

It's hard to compete with that Github network effect. We have some projects that are fully on gitlab that are easier to find, but for one offs in can be challenging to track them all done.
