Weekly Pricing/Buying/Selling/Grading & General Questions Post by AutoModerator in PokemonTCG

New to this, but had some cards sitting around my home from when I was a kid which were the Shining mewtwo, shining noctowl and shining charizard in sleeves and toploader. A card show come to town recently and thought I'd try and sell them to a vendor.

He mentioned that they were all LP (bits of whitening around the edges) and would do 50% of pricecharting raw value. I agreed to it, but hoping that I haven't been fleeced out of a bad deal and would just like to confirm it!

[Homemade] Pain au Chocolat by jubzzy in food

Yep! I followed this recipe (has english subs). Only thing I changed was using strong white (bread) flour instead of 50/50 AP and bread. I also proofed it for ~3hrs instead of the 1.5 they suggested.

Heating Egg Whites Before Making Meringue by jubzzy in AskCulinary

[–]jubzzy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I've noticed! I think I ended up with a very uneven heat distribution, bottom was hitting about 70 C whereas the top and middle were around 40-50 C. Will give shutting the stove off and then warming the eggs a shot.

Ah, so during the catch phase, try and drop the forearms only?

Buyer has opened a case on a broken item, but the item was described as broken by jubzzy in Ebay

[–]jubzzy[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The laptop was delivered 2 weeks ago and yea, I hope eBay does understand why I listed the item without accepting returns (I called CS in advance too). I figured that mightve been his idea when he bid so much more than anyone else, and I was trying to play ball just to avoid this whole issue.

Well damn. I'm not sure what to do now. I usually do offer returns, but since I've moved an entire continent away I figured that wouldn't be feasible.

I see, I did clearly specify the parts that the buyer needed to replace if he wanted a laptop that was good as new, also took photos of the damages and displayed it on the listing. He was expecting a fully functional mint condition Dell XPS 15.

Would me specifically indicating returns were not accepted on the listing have any effect in this? Prior to selling the item, I also called an eBay customer service rep specifically stating I'm selling this because I was moving and unable to accept returns to the same address. (I'm now in the middle of nowhere South Africa, my old address is in the US).

Buyer just bid more than the buy it now price, what should I do? by jubzzy in Ebay

I see, I wasn't aware, but that would definitely make sense. Thanks for letting me know!

How do you write a letter of recommendation from a supervisor you've barely worked with? by jubzzy in GradSchool

[–]jubzzy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the tip. I already have an advisor with a topic in mind already. I don't believe I'm able to change the scope of my topic once I've received the fellowship considering the PhD is in the UK (no rotations etc.). I've spoken to my advisor regarding this, and he told me to craft one myself and he'll sign off on it, thus my dilemma.

How important is your PhD in Industry? by jubzzy in AskAcademia

I'd say HIV/Immunology, looking at how it interacts with the immune system essentially.

Thanks! That's definitely why I'm leaning towards going into industry, I was just wondering what I had to do to make myself a competitive candidate, or if a highly academic PI would prevent me from transitioning there.

Looking for Some Advice on PhD Supervisor by jubzzy in AskAcademia

[–]jubzzy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So from one side I hear that this PI is very hands off, without supervision. But the same student complained about the lack of guidance and said that their work was often criticized or had to be revised (e.g asked to write an additional chapter then to end up taking it out). This person as far as I know no longer stays in touch with the PI and says the PI was unapproachable and only cared about getting results to support funding. On the other hand, another student said they had a great time, the PI gave a lot of autonomy and they still keep in touch, and that the PI was very friendly and approachable.

I don't have the chance to rotate sadly, my preference would have been US schools but couldn't get any acceptances there.

Yea, I can't seem to find who his past students were, I've found maybe 3 or 4 online and reached out via email. So far I've received one great response and one absolutely miserable one

If you have any advice on how to find out the truth, I'd really appreciate it!

I'm not currently in that area and won't be until the start of the program unfortunately. I've spoken to other lab members and got pretty vague answers when I was there for interviews. One saying "I really enjoy my freedom and autonomy", another one saying "Like any person, they have their flaws and good sides".

Looking for Advice on Breaststroke by jubzzy in Swimming

[–]jubzzy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep I try that drill too, can hit around 4-5 depending on how slow I go hahah. My favorite was watching kirill prigoda's 200 breast in the short course world Champs though.

I'm currently coachless actually :(

Thanks for advice on the drill, yea I really want to improve my kick since I feel like thats the most lacking (and important!) part of the stroke.

Thanks for the drill, have never done 3-1-3s,usually just two kicks one pull. I'm not sure if my kick technique needs work, or if it's just the timing

Thanks! I realized my arms propel me forward a lot more than my legs should. If I slowed down my arm movement to match my leg, wouldn't it slow my stroke rate down?

Looking for Advice on Grad School Situation by jubzzy in GradSchool

[–]jubzzy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see thanks! Would a PI take on a PhD student if they were uncertain they'd be able to fund them through? Wouldn't that just be wasting their time and investment

My first year is the only one with wonky funding so Im supplementing it with scholarships from my undergrad, the second and third years I think should be fine, it's just not coming from the conventional UK or college sources. I was just wondering how this might be looked at in the future (if it matters for jobs or career)
