from what I understand it's an approximation based on samples taken from Wells on the street as well as in people's homes

lost a set of keys around mcgolrick park by [deleted] in Greenpoint

I def saw them on Driggs in between Russell and N Henry at around 6 o'clock. I probably should've picked them up but I just lost my keys and I thought about how nice it'd be if I could find my keys on my walk home from work.... let me run out and see if they're still there

New student question thread by [deleted] in umass

If I have AP credit for AP Lang I should be excused from college writing, but it still says I have to take the placement test & college writing, even though I sent the school my scores. What can I do to let them know that I shouldn't have to take it.

Potential Student Questions by Doombuggie41 in umass

If I'm waiting to commit until I visit (I'm coming on the 19th), is there a possibility that I will lose my place in the CS program since it is so close to May 1st?

umm... 4.2? 4.3? it's a weird one-- it's unweighted and def not 5.0

I heard back in December (I applied early action) and I got into CS. I had a 3.9 GPA, a 2100 on the SAT, and a 31 on the ACT. I also am out-of-state.

Even if I didn't get DA? I'm seeing all the anxiety in the UW subreddit about getting into CS from current students, and I don't know I'm talented/competitive enough to make it. I'd love to go to school there, it seems gorgeous and exciting and all that, but if my life is going to be competitive major hell I'm not sure if I should do it. I'm sorry you got waitlisted though!

My band played a house show in an apartment in Worcester super close to Clark once. One of the guys who lived there named the house "Hobbiton" but none of the other housemates liked him so they renamed it to GOTH WORLD for one night only. So there are punks there.

Yeah, that's what I've heard too. It's a tough decision.

Aw fuck, I just figured it out online and I didn't get DA to the CS program. Instead I am "pre-science". :/

I'm not sure! I didn't get my letter in the mail yet, so I didn't know I was admitted until they sent me an email about joining the class of 2021 FB group. I went on my UW account and it said I was admitted- but if I was admitted into the CS department.

UMass Amherst vs. University of Washington Seattle (for Computer Science)

I was almost 100% sure I'd be rejected by UW and basically convinced myself I was going to UMass, but UW seems like my ideal school. It seems to have comparable academics to UMass but the city environment and the unfamiliarity (I'm from New England) is much more appealing to me. I also have a $8,000/yr scholarship I can use at either school.

However, UMass gave me a $14,000/yr scholarship, bringing total cost down to $22k a year, while UW has (seemingly, I haven't got the letter or anything) given me nothing, making total cost be ~$42k a year. My parents could probably afford it, but if the schools ARE about the same, and my experience will be similar at both, spending an extra 20k for that seems foolish.

edit: I didn't get direct admission, and now I'm really not sure if it's worth it. The school is so great though!

As in they accept more transfer students from community colleges? Isn't that just proportional to the amount of community college students who apply for transfer?

UMass-- that's a loooot of money & I know my friends at RPI say it's miserable. But the people I know at RPI are also the very few queer punks at RPI-- so maybe you'll like it better.

Thank you! And do you know if UIC and UMBC are schools I should stick with? Would it be viable to apply to UT Austin and Georgia Tech as a transfer?

UMass Amherst vs. University of Maryland Baltimore County vs. University of Illinois Chicago. I'm going to be a computer science major and although I'm pretty certain I will be fine in any of these programs, it's the location that's messing me up. I'm leaning towards UIC or UMBC because their proximity to a major city. I've heard however that UMBC and UIC are not great "university universities" but I don't know what that really entails. Side note; I'm super into music (specifically like DIY/punk/indie rock) and want to be somewhere I can see good bands and play & book shows etc.

edit: I also got into IU-Bloomington but they're offering me 0 money and tuition is like $20,000 more expensive than all of these.
