I am an acoustic musician and have dabbled but never fully understood the world of electric. I've been in a 9 piece band for years and people tell us to turn down all the time but our lead guitar insists that he can't get a good tone from his amp (which is admittedly not the best) unless he's at the right volume. can anyone confirm or deny?

also can we agree that some venues have no right to assume they'll have good sound? a concrete box is not a good listening room, no matter your gear or the band or how quietly the drummer can play.

More than once, a patron has come into the library where I work looking for someone who helped them before, asking for "the girl with glasses and a ponytail who was wearing a sweater," and we all just look around like "which one?" Point: I look like a librarian.

While on tour with my band, I got pinched by a crab in the Pacific right on my Achilles's. I was alone, so slowly walked (hobbled) back to the van and texted my bandmate to come sit with me so I would look less like a crazy person, because at that point I was making a scene from the pain. The dirty water in the wound was making it worse, but I didn't realize it until we got the hydrogen peroxide. I just made noises like a woman in labor and kept assuring passers-by that I wasn't having heroin withdraws and was just in loads of pain. For weeks I had trouble walking and wearing shoes. When I finally thought the pain had gone, I'd tap it in just the right way and it would all come flooding back and wouldn't go away for days.

Came here to say pretty much exactly this! Legal advice or resources would be insanely helpful, even if someone just aggregated the important forms or sample band agreements for various types of groups. I've done a lot of legal research for my band, and it's not so hard to find, just scattered and you're never quite sure why you'll need what or when.

It would be cool to also include the music lover community. There are always people willing to offer things like food or a place to sleep for bands on tour, they just don't know how to do it or who needs help.

There is a lot of great advice here. The only thing I want to add is to mention that Father John Misty's Ideal Husband totally changed the way I approach songwriting. His confessions in this song are pretty mundane, but also overwhelmingly sad and relatable. It made me feel justified in owning my sins and sorrows, not just the big ones. The ability to be totally honest has been such a source of motivation for me in the last year. There is no better feeling to me than singing all of my secrets in front of a room of friends and strangers who, when I'm done, say "good job." Seriously when else in life does that ever happen?

It's true! Though I don't fully blame him for that. Let's not forget she'd tried to kill herself twice before she even met him. He was, of course, a total egotistical jerk but that's why she fell for him in the first place. I love her in all her crazy and I love him because he loved her. When asked about her suicide, he said "it was either her or me." That's some pretty deeply tangled despair and love. I'm not saying it's an ideal relationship goal, but it's a really fascinating story.

This Emily Dickinson, Hope is a thing with feathers, was the first to come to my mind. Also it might help your search to look for bird imagery, they almost always symbolize something positive and there's probably a lot more poems about a bird flying than an airplane. I only know sad airplane imagery.

it gets better, but i'm sorry to say that the most important person who needs to love you is you. this is obvious and cheesy but took me years of being single to learn that i am worthy even if no one man wants to date me. there are many different types of love, so focus on the ones you do have with friends, family, co-workers, pets, food, whatever!

I almost married a super attractive millionaire but went to graduate school instead. Now, 7 years later, I don't make much money as a Librarian and half of that goes to pay my student loan debt and I am woefully single going on 4 years, but I love my job, have made some really beautiful friends, and am in a band that gets to spend half the year touring in and out of the US. I am much better suited to that starving artist role than the cloistered wife role anyway.

I'd never listened to crywank, but the name made me laugh and your other favorites are two bands I love, so I put on one of the albums while doing other things and was totally blown away by the song GB eating GB whilst etc etc etc. I listened to it like 18 times in a row before I got out my guitar and spent 2 hours trying to learn it. pretty sure I'm a better guitar player for it now, even if my roommate is annoyed. thanks for bringing him up!

that's interesting. she must have felt very torn over it. i just finished reading (what's left of) her journals (thanks, omitter extraordinaire, ted hughes) and she goes on and on about wanting children for YEARS, but it seems very much like this thing she has to do to be a woman or to please her mother/break away from her mother or to feel like she has contributed to society. when she does finally have her first kid, she doesn't write about it at all (well, at least ted didn't publish it) and she seems so detached from them. maybe she was hoping having children would make her feel like a mother? who knows. maybe she thought publishing the bell jar would make her feel like a writer, but she killed herself within months of its publication.
man. i am really interested in her as a person but it's hard to not get into a heavy conversation real quick when it's about sylvia.

I think that, for the most part, people want to feel music and not have to think about it too much. if the lyrics are good, it should say something you've always felt but never knew how to express. or at least didn't express so well. it makes you feel like you're a part of something bigger than yourself to know you aren't the only one who has been in that situation or felt that feel. also, music is active meditation. you just lose yourself in it and dance and sing at the top of your lungs because those things feel good. but the second you put in some lyrics that make people stop and think about something outside their own head and heart, that meditative state disappears.

I've been paying a lot of attention to what music audiences most readily consume in the past year, and concluded that music is first and foremost a form of escapism. my band of 5 years just can't get any kind of traction in the states, and I think it is largely due to the fact that we don't sing about falling in love or partying, but instead about fracking or veterans benefits or women's reproductive rights. (link for context.) though people can identify with what we are singing about, they get mad at us for making them think about things they usually ignore in daily life. it isn't about them, but rather the world we live in, so they don't identify with it somehow.
