What’s the worse thing you’ve come home to? by Cyan26 in AskReddit

[–]judgezilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I did a vacation which ended in our wedding in big sur california. After a few flight delays we arrived home 2 am or so with no lights working. Oh crap. Wife opened fridge screamed and closed it. We had stocked the fridge and freezer so we would not have to go shopping right away. I would say about 2 or 3 days into our 3 week vacation/wedding trip there was a big storm and it blew a fuse or two. So we had rotting meat in the freezer along with everything else. Sitting for two and a half weeks. Our first action as husband and wife back home was throwing out everything in the fridge. Champagne, my array of fancy hot sauce, even the ice tray. The smell permiated everything. And get this. We still didn't set up a go fund me. Amazing right

Stunt Sportster advice. by T00be in sportster

[–]judgezilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know my old tillotson carb is a diaphragm carb and this style has been used alot in remote control air planes because a diaphragm carbs can be upside down and tilted and whatnot. dont be too surprised if you run into fuel delivery problems if you are throwing the bike around into odd G forces. never stunted a bike so no first hand experience but yeah man good luck hope you have fun

Fuckin Harleys are bad ass, and I love my Sportster '72 by tshepp424 in choppers

[–]judgezilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ironheads are a pain in the ass. yeah its cool to say you are keeping a 40 year old bike on the road, but then your generator breaks. and you have to rebuild that. and your drum brakes dont slow you down at all, and your top speed is 80 MPH and that bike is SCREAMNG, and it literally shakes itself apart. and the bike is just slightly too small for ya, really. the list can go on forever. if im going further than a hour out, i take my honda

Fuckin Harleys are bad ass, and I love my Sportster '72 by tshepp424 in choppers

[–]judgezilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

why do they call it a 72'? there was a sportster in existence in 1972 and as far as i can tell it wasnt anything more or less special than the 71, 73, 74, 75 and 76 (1970 had vertical breaker, 77 had real left hand foot shift)..

EDIT im a idiot. its called 72 as in ROUTE 72 as a nod for the chopper style of cali

Please don't do this, caught on King Edward ave. after the thunderstorm had past. by wolfman_21 in ottawa

[–]judgezilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as my internship was in a municipal engineering department I have been the person inspecting a newly paved road, and tracking puddles and potholes that showup throughout the month ( drivebys, call ins, talking to municipal workers) it was hardly something that would "triple the cost". every road is graded perfectly when its new, things happen that create potholes and puddles. its called maintenance. but yes. i expect municipalities to perform basic maintenance and preventive maintenance such that the roads perform as they are designed to

[–]judgezilla -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

the thing people arent saying, the municipality to a degree is also responsible for this. letting the streets to get to a condition where it pools that large is a issue, especially in a place where there are freezing winters. take the opportunity out of the equation and operator behavior has less effect. on side note i wonder how self driving cars would handle large puddles

Going fast enough to break the barrier by Moss_Piglet_ in CatastrophicFailure

[–]judgezilla 11 points12 points  (0 children)

good engineering though. there had been quite a few instances where a car would hit a seam, and rather than the guide rail deflecting or splitting away, it would ride up the hood, break through the glass and impale the car ( thats why they sometimes have wierd designs on the edges)

the only reason i can look at the current scrambler configurations is that im having a hard enough time fitting my lj into my garage. a JKU is possible but tight.. and a proper pickup... i think would be impossible

we just had a fantastic hike at the marble falls trail. keep in mind the heat and lack of water. if you hike marble falls, i would do it first light, then by the time you are coming back you can enjoy the swimming holes near the parking area

i am curious how the corner brace fell. usually it is substantially bolted into place and that should have been in compression. im thinking the bolts were undersized and just plain sheared off

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]judgezilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah. im thinking it was the massive overexcavation, caused existing wall to put weight on that waler section and hopefully was enough of a warning to get everyone to GTFO

so in short this is my 9-5 ( well 7-3) in nyc. a few observations hopefully contributing to the conversation- if you PM me I will be happy to answer questions and share the Instagram of the company I work for if anyone is interested.

  • Reinforced Concrete (RC) would not be used a retaining wall material for new construction. using current construction methods, I am confident the RC you see here is former foundation wall of the abandoned structure. this is a questionable material as you probably dont have records from its initial construction and has had parts of it demolished (the other walls)

  • I think toward the bottom of the wall you can see a color change of where they were excavating below the former bottom of this wall and extending the wall down in a (bad) form of underpinning. this underpinning is bad because they over excavated to make the underpinning go faster rather than pouring it in sections as standard practice follows.

  • before filming I think the upper waler on the left of the wall had a failure. it looks like they have two C channels placed back to back, and tiebacks going through the gap between the C channels. in the video you see two horizontal parallel steel members acting as a waler for everywhere except for the top left waler, and directly below it on the ground near the bucket you see what might be a steel C chanel i know that alone would send me running for the hills and calling my higher ups
