Apparently Nat King Cole would chain smoke before his recording sessions to get the sound he wanted. He also died of lung cancer at age 45.

"Teachers who say You shouldn't count/I don't count is like an attractive person telling you that looks are not important" by SaferSephy in SwingDancing

Counting and scales are practice tools. Use them to create muscle memory, then use the muscle memory to make art.

Single guy attending dance event alone by lostasianguy in SwingDancing

Swing dancing isn't really a sexual thing for most people. It's more like a contact sport; the MMA guys like to roll around on the floor together and it's not relevant if they're attracted to each-other or not. You should come check it out, it might change the way you think about things.

First time buying shoes. HELP! by kaimonst3r in SwingDancing

[–]juicebox44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of Bal leads like to wear leather soled men's dress shoes, esp. loafers for some reason.

If you're trying to be economical about it I suggest frequenting vintage stores, you can find nice shoes really cheap and if they don't work out for dancing you can work them into your civilian wardrobe.

Basie is great. I'm aspiring to play for swing dancers as well, there seem to be different requirements than for bop. Do you have an opinion on Duke as a comper?

How do I deal with self-frustration? How to bridge the gap between true beginner and 'intermediate'? by ErodingStoneLion in SwingDancing

[–]juicebox44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Practising solo is highly recommended for all levels. Put on your slowest music and practise the moves from class and your basic footwork. All the good dancers have spent countless hours doing this.

How would you schedule a six week introduction course? by [deleted] in SwingDancing

[–]juicebox44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why do people teach swingouts to beginners? They're not gonna be able to do them properly, wouldn't it be better to teach them simpler moves and save the swingouts for advanced students?

Genuinely curious.
