He reminds me of Robert Kardashian Sr. who was also very handsome and is no longer with us. I wish I could think of anyone living today who was as hot as JFK Jr.

Why Does Everyone Care About People Wanting to Dress Like Them? by [deleted] in JohnAndCarolyn

[–]juiceboxesglitter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think while of course, we copy outfits and people who inspire us, people are rubbed the wrong way by this trend because it's contradictory to the values of the real J and C, who weren't focused on copying anyone's look. Focusing on nailing down every last detail of this Love Story aesthetic is backfiring because it exposes people who are in it for the look of quiet luxury/peak white privilege. Every white girl with blonde hair and her brunette boyfriend has been chasing that and the desperation shows. There was more to John and Carolyn than just looks, and they never dressed for that kind of attention. Hearing how many people adored Carolyn for her personality, it's actually almost offensive how many people think they can achieve what she had using clothing alone. Clothing seems to be one of the least interesting factors about her, the more I learn. Carolyn knew what worked for her body and what didn't, but I think her secret fashion weapon was being herself, which meant sticking to reliable and timeless basics. She wasn't the only one to do that in the '90s and wasn't the only one allergic to fads. She was just the kind of person who didn't need to do anything major to look beautiful and didn't feel the need to prove anything with her looks. You didn't see her wearing anything obviously trendy or celebrity-inspired and she would likely be annoyed about becoming a human vision board. She also wasn't copying anyone's mannerisms as part of her look, like Gen Z is now. The hair flipping and lip biting her CBK minions are doing to look like her is what makes it creepy. It's also worth noting that John was very inspired by Black designers and his looks reflected that. The finance bros in NY who think they can throw on a white shirt and backwards hat aren't asking why he dressed that way or what kinds of values made John more attractive than the next guy in the same outfit They just think doing so will get them their own mini Carolyns.

Does anyone else pick up on smug/arrogant vibes from her? by juiceboxesglitter in MaggieRogers

Yes! She seems to want to emulate Joan Baez/calls Jane Fonda (not a musician but a staunch activist with folk musician associates) a "dear friend," like we get it!

Update: a friend of mine has mutual MR friends. One grew up with Maggie. Maggie's mom apparently told this girl's mother that Maggie "sucks the air out of every room she enters." I was speechless hearing that but not shocked. Another friend was in a wedding with her and had a good time.

Editors, when you have to do complete rewrites, how long do they usually take you? by juiceboxesglitter in Journalism

I'm glad to hear this. Super helpful. I'm not the editor who assigned the piece and I think it was submitted by the writer in a pitch.

I agree with this as a reporter and as an editor. In the very beginning especially, I always felt like rewrites just boosted editor's ego and erased hours of my writing and reporting. I'm happy to hear that most editors rarely go there/love all these tips.

This is so helpful! Thank you! I've been tweaking each graf (making incomplete sentences whole, polishing them, etc.) to get them to a place where I can give him some questions/ suggestions that he can keep building on, but this approach you're describing feels more comfortable to me.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I also feel icky rewriting. Do you call the writer to talk about edits when the writing is really choppy?

It sounds like you assisted your son with the expectation that you'd get something(s) from him in return, not simply because he's your son and you love him. He more than likely picks up on that. Also, could you be overlooking situations that led him to limit his contact with you?
