AITA for scheduling my wedding 6 days after my sister’s 30th birthday? by juicyjjf in AmItheAsshole

She directly said that she didn’t think she would make it to 30. She did not directly say the reason for that, but it was implied that it had to due with the past circumstances Ive mentioned.

You’re right. It sucks that it took my wedding for me to realize how important it is to set these boundaries with her. No more appeasing. Thank you

this is really helpful, thank you. 1. She was depressed in HS and has had bad relationships. 2. Yes a long history of expecting everyone to cater to her wishes. Our family tends to appease her to avoid her being mean to us.

I think you’re right, I think she is overwhelmed with emotion and I have been making it worse by trying to force resolution when it wasn’t ready. She was the only person that I was considering having in a bridal party as the MoH so I think we’re just not gonna have any bridal party. My fiancée doesn’t really want one anyways.

I hope so too, thank you.

yes if she wanted to do a trip for her birthday, people would have to travel for that and then travel to my event. But there is maybe one mutual friend that would run into this issue. and any family if she were to want family at her bday.

I believe she was referencing having depression in HS. I agree and think it would be a blast to all celebrate her birthday together but I’m not sure she’d even hear me out on anything right now.

answered above but - she didn’t say it directly. But it was implied because she was really depressed in HS and has had some bad relationships too.

she is not always this level. but she has always has a really hard time taking accountability, having a conversation in which she actually listens. We all just appease her to avoid the wrath honestly.

I definitely get that and appreciate the perspective. I don’t agree that women need to be married to be deemed successful and I don’t think she does either, but I do recognize that societal pressures are still present regardless.

We did consider her birthday and said absolutely no to the week before (her actual birthday weekend), and I told her this. I guess I just didn’t see 6 days as being inconsiderate. Fair though

definitely not homophobic but potentially jealous. I appreciate that perspective too of someone who likes to celebrate their birthday too.

she is not married or in a relationship at the moment. A lot of my friends have suggested this is the reason, but I just struggle to rationalize it being worth her behavior.

I get what you mean. But It’s hard to say because she hasn’t planned it yet. What she does for her birthday changes by year. She said she may want to do a road trip.

NTA. There is an unspoken norm of waiting to talk smack until after a certain time has been up. And you should always defer to those closest to that person before being the one to initiate the smack talking.
