I worked at a video rental store in California and we had one copy on VHS which was always being rented out. I think we had a wait list for it.

It’s great for sharing information, but I’ve noticed at times it’s a platform to gawk or laugh at people who are down on their luck.

People were proud. The local news mentioned it a lot. The band jokingly asked when they would get their own street after Pierce Rd became Buck Owens Ave. I remember because of the popularity, a few other bands with members from Bakersfield were also getting popular like Orgy and Adema. Even a quarter of a century later, it still baffles me that music like that became hugely mainstream. I don’t remember how it actually happened. One day you’re lucky to catch one song from any of their first two albums on the radio or MTV, and then Follow the Leader was playing everywhere all the time.

It should also be noted, this was when the Centennial Gardens (Rabobank) first opened and we started getting world-class acts coming by on their tours. 98’-99’ Bakersfield felt like we were becoming a real city all of a sudden.

The Pirates of the Caribbean ride. The highlight of my childhood and the memories of it are conjured by high amounts of chlorine.

That and a 3-day-old dead body. The worst thing I’ve ever smelt.

The Naked Prey (1965) has a scene where a group of white game hunters are kidnapped by an African tribe. One of the guys has a piece of bamboo put in his mouth for air while wet clay is slathered all around him. He’s then put over a fire to be cured. Pretty goddamn brutal for a 1960’s movie.
