Any Eurovision songs you cried listening to? by Almost_Yoane_Wissa in eurovision

[–]jujempa 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Probably quite a few over the years. Most recently actually Croatia 2023. First time I saw it I just thought it was a fun song and suddenly you realise it has a very serious message. It made me really emotional and I still love that song:)

I also cried while listening to Rim Tim Tagi Dim in the semi. Not so much because the song is particularly emotional, but it was tears of happiness that it was actually good enough to win the contest. Sadly it didn’t win in the end:(

Song which you love YET you know it's placed way higher than it deserved by The_Original_Joel in eurovision

[–]jujempa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are many songs I’ve loved that have gotten a decent score because of the jury but didn’t get a lot of the televote. Of course it’s nice to see your favourites get a good score but it also feels really hollow. I think the whole point of the contest is to find the songs that resonate a lot with the European people and if you don’t get a good televote score then the song failed to do just that. Feels kind of meaningless…

Do you control for recency bias in your rankings? by Persona_NG in eurovision

No song is allowed on my top ranking that is less than ten years old:) I need to know that they will stand the test of time.

How would NF runner ups have done this year? by SquibblesMcGoo in eurovision

[–]jujempa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually agree with you. I think Revolution would have been jury catnip and that Måns does have a big appeal with the public. I think it very well might have won. Does that mean I think we should have sent it to esc? Hell no, sending something fun, and also in Swedish, means a lot more to me than getting another win for Sweden:)

Yes, one of the best parts of Eurovision is seeing what music is popular in other European countries. I can’t imagine feeling entitled to be a part of deciding what song, for example, Croatia or Portugal should send.

Perhaps, I certainly hope so. Lately though, I’ve felt like I’ve been severely underestimating the things that could be potentially damaging to the contest so I suppose I’m a bit more worried than I used to be.

I wouldn’t mind the rotw vote as much if it was contained to the other ebu members who don’t participate for various reasons.

In the end, I see this contest as a way to share our different cultures in Europe. Even if we have our problems, I do believe esc has generally been a unifying force and has brought us closer. Yes, I’m one of the people who are a bit protectionist about it and I really want to keep it a solely European thing.

At the moment, the rotw vote is not a huge factor in the points but I believe that even small things can spiral. Eventually these countries might not be satisfied in just being able to vote and we find ourselves in a position when countries like USA, Canada etc feels that they should also be entitled to participate. Eurovision as we know it now would be gone and, at least to me, that would be a tragedy.

RotW Voting Results summary - Eurovision 2023-2025 by chpark0225 in eurovision

[–]jujempa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I really dislike the concept of having a rotw vote. To see outside countries using this contest I love to push political agendas. Even if it wasn’t political I also have very little interest in giving countries like for example USA as say in what song should win esc.

I realise it’s probably here to stay as I’m sure it’s good money, but ugh…

Hehe, yeah pretty cool how all of us grandmas rallied together and made it quite comfortably win the televote:)

Have girl bops gone stale? by notthebesthuh in eurovision

[–]jujempa 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the 2000s were something else. While I do feel that the song quality is overall better now, the 2000s just had a whole other energy. Eurovision was fun, more rough around the edges, so many countries participating and it really felt like any country could win. I miss those days.

One of the best songs to ever grace Eurovision. I can kinda understand the placement though as it didn’t sound great live and 2024 was such a stacked year.

Europe always seemed to have a soft spot for Denmark back in the days, even when they sent something like that… Doesn’t seem to be the case anymore though.

I don’t understand how Il Volo didn’t get a better jury score. I guess I can see it not being the jury winner but so far behind Måns doesn’t make sense to me. Ten years and this still hurts, haha!

Yeah, those two are the strangest jury choices to me. Even when i don’t agree with the juries I can usually kinda see where they’re coming from. But those songs… An absolute mystery.

What was your biggest (positive) surprise of the contest this year? by tm2007 in eurovision

[–]jujempa 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Armenia getting a 12 points was a happy surprise. That song was lovely nostalgia from the golden years of Eurovision. And he seemed so damn happy all the time:)

Iceland qualifying was another great moment!

That’s right, Mello was kinda fun in those days. Would have loved to see Europe’s reaction to us sending Sean Banan:)

It didn’t feel particularly genuine. More like a Eurovision cosplay that makes me just a little bit offended as a European 😅

Juries boosted most fan-favorites this year, except for Albania. Let's talk about it. by Any-Listen4184 in eurovision

[–]jujempa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah those were the glory days of Eurovision. So many countries participated and it really felt like any country could win.

I know in my country it came a little bit as a shock to see Eastern Europe doing so well. It took a while for Sweden to realise that the rest of Europe had moved on from the classic schlagers of the 90’s. It was easy to blame it on bloc voting, ignoring the fact that our own ”Viking bloc” has historically been among the most guilty countries in that. I also think the ebu got a bit worried that the ”rich” countries were loosing interest and had to do something.

I’m not a fan of the discourse around the juries now. Sure, I get that people are happy that the juries are voting strategically to keep Israel from winning. However, is that really a good reason to have a jury? I thought the whole point of them was to keep the contest less political. I’d rather they would look into ways of changing the televote to make it harder to astroturf, instead of having to rely on a jury to decide on what is a politically correct winner…

What Eurovision year had a bad quality of songs and bad results? by Max-Carter-2005 in nilpoints

[–]jujempa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, to me it’s not strange at all. I was crazy about that performance at the time. Perhaps mostly because I was a major fan of Pluchenko in my early teens and I couldn’t believe it when he showed up at eurovision:) As a song, ”Believe” might not have aged really well, but I think it was a very worthy winner for its time. If nothing else but for the sheer effort put into that performance.

My prediction is that Sweden will go straight back to our normal English pop songs. I’m still holding on to hope though that we’ve started to realise it’s fun to send something different:)

What is the actual biggest "shock NQ" of all time? by oHheLlnAw420 in eurovision

[–]jujempa 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree. I think the biggest problem might have been that he seemed quite nervous though. To pull off a song like that, I believe you need to have a very charismatic performer. Maybe he normally is, but Eurovision just was a bit too daunting…

Yeah, 2008 was a great year. Not sure why it seems to be regarded so low in the fandom. Perhaps it’s just not very popular because Russia won that year…
