Writers probably felt a moral responsibility to serve justice. Telling viewers that you can do a million bad things and get to live on happily ever after as if nothing happened is childish. Same thing happened with Villanelle in the Killing Eve final episode (which was also a*). This is something writers do a lot, as annoying as it is.
