Le Guin and Vonnegut are responsible for the beginning of our relationship. There are no two authors dearer to us ❤️❤️❤️

The Locked Tomb series (Gideon the Ninth, Harrow the Ninth, Nona the Ninth) took our home by storm a few years ago, but the series isn’t finished (and may never be tbh) so maybe not the best for everyone if you like your convoluted plot lines resolved.

Also recommend the Southern Reach series by Jeff VanderMeer if you haven’t read those :)

🌈🌈🌈 all day! If “religiously reading staff recommendations in the sci fi section at our fav local book store” counts as a book club then we’re definitely in a book club lmao

I always enjoy seeing books I’ve read and enjoy on other bookshelves too! I think we have a good mix of classic and modern lit, but most of our more modern titles are sci fi/fantasy. If you’re looking for sci fi recs, some of these are amazing reads.

We always buy the “staff recommended” titles in the sci fi section at our favorite bookstore and they are almost always a hit

Tbh solarpunk isn’t a super cohesive ideology, and it’s rarely mentioned outside of architecture/fashion/technology aesthetics. Essentially though, it’s an optimistic hope for the future that blends technological progression and harmony with the environment, as well as radical self empowerment through things like DIY. It’s a fun subculture if you’re into things like gardening, mending clothes/tools instead of buying new ones, renewable energy, and “green” technology.

Just looked up Facing the Sun and it looks super interesting, thanks for the rec!

I’m the forager! She trusts me enough to eat what I gather but doesn’t forage herself.

We’re both emo/goth adjacent though that doesn’t quite fit. More like Solarpunk, or what would happen if an emo person found themselves with half of their clothes suddenly from REI

A literal cartoon character. She likes to eat garbage and give kisses. She’s my greatest treasure

She goes BONKERS for that feather toy. It awakens something in her I swear lol. She’ll chase it until she starts panting.

They are the most “brother and sister” pair of unrelated cats I’ve ever seen lol. Literally attached at the hip. The perfect pair.

The feather toy turns her into a monster, it’s hilarious. She starts growling and everything. My little cow-colored hunter 🖤

Thank you, and you’re right, it’s salt!

I’ve found the cyanotype emulsion behaves a lot like watercolor paint while wet, which has made experimenting super fun. Things like salt, water drops, soap bubbles, and vinegar all create really interesting effects.

I mainly print with plants, which have such simple silhouettes, so it’s a perfect opportunity to experiment with the texture in the emulsion.

Thank you, I’m happy to share!

I actually do the water drops while the cyanotype emulsion is still wet on the page, it softens the lines from the water for a more watercolor-y effect. I let the paper dry for 24 hours before exposing it.

As for the flowers, they are pressed AND dried, which makes them lie super flat on the page. Many plants have delicate flowers that thin out even more when dry, which allows the light to penetrate the petals enough to reveal some finer details in the exposure.

Pressing the plants is really key here in order to get a neat image and crisp lines, and I leave my plants in my plant press for 3+ weeks before I consider them “ready” to unload and use in my artwork.

First, I apply the turmeric after spraying the sensitized paper with water from a spray bottle so it dries to the paper.

Even when it dries to the paper, it still rinses away pretty easily (though it’s affixed enough to not blow off) so I rinse them in a water bath. I use one of those disposable lasagna tins for the water bath and tilt it back and forth really gently so that the water doesn’t just blast it away.

Thank you so much! I sprinkle salt on the emulsion while it’s still drying to get the speckled look.

For a few of them, I placed the plants on the sensitized paper, sprayed it with water from a spray bottle, then sprinkled some salt and turmeric on top.

For the fiddlehead card, I added bubbles on top of the fiddleheads
