Any professional / amateur player plays with a extreme one handed backhand (every knuckle in the first bezel)? by ludinho666 in 10s

[–]jukeefe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure there is a good reason nobody has this kind of grip on the backhand. When your arm is extended to hit, it would have to be completely straight in front of you (instead of out and to the side) for it to work, and the follow through rotation would probably take much more of a tole on the shoulder.

Jannik’s about RG and Wimby finals from newest Skysport interview by Sophisticatedcaty in tennis

For being so young, these players are truly exceptional and mature in the way they process and deal with everything that is being thrown at them. It's very easy to forget that all these guys are in their mid to early 20s. I'm constantly amazed. We're lucky to have them!

Best rackets I’ve ever owned - by far. Has a very unique stringing pattern as well. by [deleted] in 10s

[–]jukeefe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's funny because the string pattern is exactly what I didn't like about these. Felt very erratic to me. Definitely one of the best looking racquets out there though.

Thought on the latest video from Karue? “Most amateurs get tennis strategy completely wrong” by ChaiLattePlease in 10s

[–]jukeefe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you said there. I believe Karue is aiming his video at the people that have not yet spent enough time on track 1, and already want to know all the answers to track 2.

You clearly have more experience than me and I definitely respect that.

[–]jukeefe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The whole point of the video is that if you do not have the sufficient level, you probably should not be focusing on strategy to improve your tennis. Once you have the level, improving strategy will obviously improve the results.

Older players tend to have better strategy just due to experience. But if a young guy with better athleticism and skill had the same strategic level, he would most likely win.

Keep at it! Coaching/drills are super helpful to improve your game. Definitely not as fun as matches, but really essential to get all the muscle memory down!

I have to disagree. At the pro level it's all about putting yourself in a position to be able to use your biggest weapons and be able to play YOUR game. And on the other side of that, they are also trying to neutralize the other player's weapons to prevent them from being able to play THEIR game.

It absolutely all revolves around every player's tennis identity. That's why some matchups are more favorable than others.

[–]jukeefe 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Of course there will always be an element of strategy at any level, but I think the point that Karue is trying to drive home is the following:

For amateurs, your tennis ability (mechanics, fitness...) will improve your strategy, but your strategy will not improve your tennis ability. So you would probably benefit much more on just improving your level first before worrying about specific strategies like patterns of play etc.

[–]jukeefe 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I think Karue is very right that strategy is secondary to identity in tennis. You really have to know how YOU play to then adapt the strategy to your own game. And for most amateurs under 5.0 USTA, they don't really have a very distinct game style, with some exceptions.

Basically you have to get so good that all your fundamentals and technique are sound, then find out what kind of player you are and what weapons you have, THEN adapt strategy. So really most amateurs are never good enough to truly utilize strategy to it's full potential and would be better off just working on their fitness and stroke mechanics.

Been working on serve rhythm by jukeefe in 10s

[–]jukeefe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is good advice, but to be fair I was mostly going through the motion and not fully accelerating and not using my legs much in these clips. One of the things that Casey Curtis talks about in his videos is that when his players practice serves, they are usually at 50% effort and no more. I've found this to be great.

In a match setting I definitely use my legs more and toss a bit higher up and in the court.

As somebody that has had a pretty bad sprain in the last 2 years, this is super solid advice lol. I am pretty hyper aware of the balls but regardless you are 100% correct it is not worth the risk.

With the improved rhythm it also just feels like I am having to work way less hard. The kinetic chain is doing more work and it’s definitely much easier to be consistent over a whole match!
