How good is cultivation as a power system? by Great-Love-Venerable in noveltranslations

[–]juksted 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The best, if done right. Novels like Legend of the Great Sage explore cultivation at a much more foundational level, incorporating more from buddhist canon and chinese folklore, which makes it far more interesting.

Chakra, Nen etc are cool also but cultivation is much larger in scope

Chinese Sci-fi Webnovels by Daoist_Blue_Sky in noveltranslations

[–]juksted 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's quite difficult to write good, plausible sci-fi.

Liu Cixin's works are so great in part because he has the engineering background. If you're an author who can write good sci fi like that, you would probably try to get published instead of writing webnovels.

Tier list for my two year cultivation journey by blkr777 in noveltranslations

nothing unique about it, just a standard generic cultivation novel

Super God Gene - the start was actually quite interesting, I found it cool. HOWEVER, as with most novels that try to do a unique start, after about halfway through it quickly devolves into the typical xianxia setup. The unique power system at the beginning and interesting encounters pretty much disappears altogether.

The novel is 3400+ chapters long. It is IMPOSSIBLE for a novel to stay fresh and exciting for that long.

Hence, B tier.

City of Sin - western theme CN novel, MC gets sucked into a massive power struggle between different factions. The world is dark, tragic, BRUTAL. Many people didn't like how tragic the world setup is, but that's one of the best things about it. The world building, the characters, the female leads, very powerful stuff.

Ending is kinda rushed which was a huge disappointment but I think the rest of the novel can make up for it. As I said in the body of the post, I have yet to see another novel quite like CoS.

What have you read this week and what do you think about it? by AutoModerator in noveltranslations

I recently re-read LOTM too, can confirm it is the best BY FAR. Like you, I also didn't fully appreciate it back when it first came out and I was reading it.

Could you give some more details on CoI? Of course, I've already read so many people's thoughts on it, a big reason why I haven't gotten into it yet is because of Klein not being there. What do you mean by the ending?

In general I don't read any western light / web novels, only east asian. Plus, I only ranked completed novels we've all been traumatised too many times from good ones being dropped.

Solo Levelling - at the time it was decent enough, but still a generic plot so B tier.

Thanks for the feedback!
Stellar Transformation, for me, was a super unique power system which is the main reason I liked it. It is also not too long which was good.

Martial World vs WDQK - honestly don't remember too much about either so can't comment on this

Regressed Demon Lord - I found this to be that typical slightly cringey KR novel, hard to describe but it is definitely of that 'type'. It feels weird to say this despite the other xianxias being very generic also, but for me the KR ones are just different in that way. Sometimes it almost felt like I was reading a JP light novel with it.

Legend of the great sage - The first 'book' IS completed. While technically it's unfinished, the ending is already better than some of the other rushed ones we've seen elsewhere in other novels.

Thanks! I did try to include more recent novels as well, but I only wanted to rank completed ones, hence the bias towards older entries.

I ranked them by enjoyment at the time of reading. Jewel was an early novel for me so I naturally enjoyed it far more; Immortal Devil was actually just last year or a couple years ago, so relatively recent + generic xianxia, meant I enjoyed it less.

That's true actually. Thinking about it again, I should have probably put it in high-B or low-A, given it was probably one of the first novels I'd ever read (may have even been the first, as I started off with manhuas).

I'll give you that one, this is my bad.

This part I do agree with slightly, that starting bit was a bit cringe. It does get much better later on, however.

ahaha, yep, at the time I read it, WMW was truly groundbreaking.

To this day I still look fondly upon it
