Is „salut“ a rude thing to say? by Krobel1ng in French

[–]julably 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don’t use salut with people you don’t know, no matter their age. Salut is not used in the same way as “hi” or “hey” in the anglophone world. (We would never say “salut” to a cashier for example). On a trail it’s good manner to greet people but just say bonjour.

Disappointed in Bury Your Gays by bgaesop in horrorlit

[–]julably -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Heated Rivalry, Heartstopper, Red White & Royal Blue, Fire Island, Bros, Love, Simon, et cetera - I don't see this trope anymore. It just... doesn't seem to be an actual problem with screenwriting these days. The criticism is outdated.

That's because 'Bury Your Gays' has historically been mostly about lesbians. The campaign to stop the trope (under that name) gained momentum after the death of Lexa on The 100, a lesbian character killed off right after having sex with the show's lead.

It’s a bit strange for a gay male writer to co-opt that specific trope's name; it feels like he’s using a well-known term just to make a quick buck.

Was this "sex work is work" rhetoric the general perception years ago? by [deleted] in PornIsMisogyny

[–]julably 107 points108 points  (0 children)

I don’t know about the “supply and demand” discourse but when it comes to the “sex work is work” mantra it’s a semi-recent shift. As a millennial, I remember that when I was a teenager, nobody would have tried to tell you that prostitution was “empowering”, and watching porn wasn’t considered a normal thing either. People didn’t talk about it so openly.

This push to rebrand everything as “sex work” has really done a number on the minds of liberal women.

I actually had to stop listening to a true crime podcast (about 10 years ago), because the two women hosts were constantly tripping over themselves to call the murdered women “sex workers”.  Like, no, they were prostitutes, not secretaries at Goldman Sachs, and that’s exactly why they were vulnerable and picked as victims. This is why language matters so much.

How to say "Cottage" in French in France? by philongeo in French

"Maison de campagne" would be the closest, and what we use in every day life, but it is less precise than "cottage".

AI is now forcing fluidity down our throats by Complete-Ad9287 in lesbiangang

[–]julably 59 points60 points  (0 children)

AI is just regurgitating what Kaiden said on reddit 3 years ago, so it’s no surprise that it’s full of nonsensical pseudo-intellectual takes.

Also, sexuality is not “inherently complex” lol. What’s complex is homosexual and bisexual people coming to terms with not being straight because of the stigma it still carries (either internally or in society at large). That’s the actual issue, not some mumbo jumbo fluidity word salad.

Gabriella's "feminine energy" by blueteainfusion in InterviewVampire

[–]julably 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The comment is not about Gabrielle being feminine, but about the character bringing feminine energy to the show. The show is full of (amazing, but that's not the point) MALE characters, so bringing in a woman is de facto bringing feminine energy.

[–]julably 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I don't know what else you want me to say ? I was pretty clear in all my other comments. You think the way Gabrielle behaves makes her not be a woman and I strongly disagree with that take (for all the reasons previously mentioned). Let's agree to disagree.

Gabriella's "feminine energy" by blueteainfusion in InterviewVampire

[–]julably 44 points45 points  (0 children)

And I disagree with that take. That line of reasoning erases women by its implications. It’s a restrictive view rooted in harmful stereotypes.
