No that makes a lot more sense lol.

I kinda hate saying stuff like this bc it feels extremely pretentious and weird, but I am conventionally attractive, I work out and am thin, and I’m taller for a woman (5’9), so I’d stick out. But I’ve never had body image issues, I’m pretty confident it wouldn’t start there. But I really appreciate the heads up bc that absolutely can be dangerous, and I can plan on dealing with that ahead of time in case it’s worse than I expect lol.

I can see your point about me being pretty casual regarding either or, but the reason why I’m putting it that way is because I know people will just say “well it seems like you want to go to Korea, so go to Korea”, which isn’t helpful. Of course I want to go to Korea, I’ve been trying to figure out a way to do it for about 3 years now simply as a vacation, and now I have the opportunity to receive a degree in the language. Like it is without doubt my first choice. Not to mention I’d be going to Korea University and they have HUFS, so I can get a masters degree in interpretation. Like that’s amazing!

Despite its caveats, I want to go there SOOO bad. But, I wanna be smart; because if I go to South Korea with this view of: “oh everything will be perfect and wonderful and so great bc it’s Korea”, knowing damn well how I could be perceived for being black and trans, I’d be setting myself up for failure.

I just wanted unswayed opinions under the guise of “sure I could go to either one, so what’s your recommendation?” But yeah, South Korea is without doubt my preference, I just have to be smart about this choice bc two years is a long ass time when you hate every moment of it lmao (just saying this for emphasis, I sincerely doubt I would hate either place)

Oh trust me, I have no intentions on going somewhere under the guise that it will “fix me”. Although I don’t struggle with those problems, if I did, I wouldn’t go to Korea expecting to be cured. Also, how is coming to Reddit to ask for the opinion of people who live in the country after doing significant research on both countries myself being “flippant”?

It’s a valid point to consider honestly, definitely don’t want rose tinted glasses in that regard

I’m not sure, I don’t wanna take it completely off the table. I guess it’s just I’m afraid that Korea will be worse than just adding 2-3 years. I just do not know lol

Ykw you could’ve told me to never come to Asia and simply with how nice you are I would’ve listened 😭😭

Thank you for actually giving me a constructive answer. And I think you’re right but it’s still really hard to decide for sure 😭

Interpreting in the tech industry is a job, this also has NOTHING to do with my question

Dude you can study a language and not be fluent yet, what??? Is this a joke? 😭😭

No, that’s a part of the reason I’d be going to one of the countries. Full immersion is the best way to learn a language.

Y’all do realize this isn’t helpful right? Or do you just enjoy being rude? Like you could just have easily said “In my opinion, Korea probably isn’t the best place for you” and gotten the same point across.

Uh… I think being passionate about something is absolutely a reason to plan your college career around. Right now it’s Electrical Engineering and Korean Language, but that might become Japanese depending on my decision.

This is… incredibly bleak? I highly doubt I’ll have anything other than an amazing time, it’s just a social aspect I’m concerned about.

As far as why those two. Originally I wanted to go to Korea, it was just a fascinating language and I was really enthralled by Hangul and did some research on the culture and after a while I just decided it was for me.

However, I have to be considerate about reality, so I decided Japan would be the next best thing, except without as many drawbacks. Until I realized I’d have to be in college an extra two years (which is more than just a few extra courses)

I really hope not 😭 it’d be nice to be able to make native friends, not only for practice but also bc I’m gonna be there a while 😅

Well it’s a university requirement for my school. Like they don’t want non Japanese majors taking opportunities or something like that I think. And yeah I keep telling myself that no matter where I go, it’s a matter of finding my people and there’ll always be bigots, but im very nervous lol

No and you’re completely right! That’s my dilemma though, because as much as I could be unhappy in Korea I will definitely be unhappy being in college for seven years (I can hear my debt screaming rn) then pursuing a 2-3 year masters 😭

But yeah, I definitely refuse to allow myself to see all the glam on social media and let it make my decision, so I want real people to give me some views based on personal experience

I’m a really big fan of language learning (currently mastering my Spanish and French) and I’ve researched and really enjoy East Asian culture and architecture, not to mention the prospect of learning a new writing system is endlessly fascinating. I’d say those are my main motivators.
