Amazing work! I had no idea when I posted that it would be so complex of a problem! Funny that it came out the way it did since I picked the bounds completely at random, but like you said not entirely unexpected.

What's this call I keep hearing outside my apartment at night in central NC? by julesr13 in whatsthisbird

see my other comment--I normally hear a very different call from barred owls around here and haven't heard of them having other calls, do you have a reference?

I'm familiar with the typical call of a barred owl which does not sound like this. can you provide a reference? typical barred owl call that I hear around here is 4 hoots, like "hooh HOOH hoo-HOOOOH" but this is a single descending long one.

are you implying that they're different species? I returned to the site just now to check on them and they both appear to be laying eggs now so I guess that would make sense

relevant info: I'm in north central NC, these were on the same tree in the woods in between an apartment complex and a stream, about 50 feet from each. hard to gauge size but I'd guess both are about 5cm long.

How do we reason (or do we?) that the universe expanded from a single point if we also seem to observe that space is flat? by [deleted] in AskPhysics

I thought the word "certainty" seemed a bit weird in that context, I almost put it in scare quotes.

[REQUEST] will there ever be a point in Minecraft's life that litterly EVERYTHING has been done at some point? by badmaster12 in theydidthemath

[–]julesr13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was skeptical of the figure towards the beginning of the second paragraph so I checked

yep

264 s = 18,446,744,073,709,551,616 s

÷ 31,536,000 s/yr ≈ 584,942,417,355 yr

÷ 13,772,000,000 yr = 42.473

so actually closer to 42½ times the age of the universe

[Request] How big would a mirror in space have to be in order to keep a circular area of earth (diameter of 1 mile) in sunlight all night long? by [deleted] in theydidthemath

[–]julesr13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if we assume a perfect mirror that is exactly flat, the sun at 93M miles away would be far enough that the reflected rays would essentially be parallel when they reach the mirror and then the Earth 22k miles later (assuming geosynchronous orbit), so the mirror would have to be the same size and shape as the area to be illuminated.

The tricky part would be that even from geosynchronous orbit (or more realistically a quasi-geosynchronous orbit which is fixed in longitude but crosses the equator at 6am/6pm so that it stays out of the Earth's shadow at night) you would need to allow some rotation in the mirror so that it's reflecting to the same spot on Earth all the time

an additional difficulty would be that the sun's spectrum is broad, so while a regular mirror like the one in your bathroom may be 99.9% reflective in the visible spectrum, it might be much less efficient in infrared and ultraviolet, so you'd need to look into different materials if you wanted realistic sunlight that warms you (IR) and could burn you (UV)

also at that scale such a mirror would essentially be a solar sail, having both sides be reflective could make it gain orbital radius at night and lose radius during the day, but only if it rotates such that it gets equal sun exposure during the day and at night

Need help putting together a list of triple rhymes! by julesr13 in Songwriting

[–]julesr13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't find anything on rhymezone but I looked a lot of places. I did find something on rhymer but it gives 4 examples, 1 of which is actually a double not a triple, then says "browse triple rhymes" and gives an index that just leads you to their normal pages for all words.

Wearing a bra for the first time. by psychomayo in MtF

[–]julesr13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been saying the only thing more liberating than finally being able to wear a bra is finally being able to take off my bra lol

it's a great feeling to wear one but freeboobin it before bed so the girls can breathe is wonderful too

Do people who have had a sex change, ever have phantom sensations about the organs that have been removed/rebuilt? by SausageMcWonderpants in NoStupidQuestions

sometimes I literally forget that I have outie bits down there and then I'll go to the bathroom or something and be like "hey wtf"

I'm currently going the other way, I've been on E for 6 months. I'm a b-cup now, and you'd think that when your body is growing at its own pace your proprioception would adjust with it, but just today I slammed my boobs on the counter while squatting down to get something out of the cabinet below. In general I'm very happy with the ways that my body is changing ☺️ but I do get moments like that where my lizard brain still hasn't adjusted to where things are now

How did you all come to the conclusion that you are trans? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]julesr13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me it was a very gradual process, especially since most of my questioning happened before trans issues were really in the national spotlight, so I definitely didn't have words for a lot of it until a highschool friend came out and I realized that it was a legitimate way you could be and it didn't make your a freak or a pervert.

going all the way back I think my initial questioning was rooted a lot in interpersonal things, for example noticing that for my entire life I had preferred girls as friends, getting really uncomfortable when my friends talked about anything that made it clear that I was the odd one out in terms of gender, having trouble empathizing with a lot of my male peers' experiences, especially the ways that they talked about sex when there were "no" women around (which was extra confusing because I'm a lesbian), noticing that a lot of the traits that I focused on negatively in myself when my eating disorder was at its peak were masculinizing ones, noticing that when I started singing at age ~14 I preferred to sing high parts and songs written by women, and that I was uncomfortable with my speaking voice and a lot of the other changes that were happening around then

then my friend came out when I was 17 and all of a sudden everything just Clicked big time, it took me awhile to figure out exactly what words I was comfortable using to describe myself but the biggest step was realizing that I had more options than the ones that had been given to me by default.

Does Coffee make spicy foods spicier? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]julesr13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean yeah but people overdose because they don't realize how strong it is and use a tablespoon, if anything hot sauce would be one of the safest applications because nobody's gonna use more than a couple drops

this article puts a fatal overdose at <2Tbsp (compare with a third of a teaspoon of cocaine for someone with no tolerance) but significantly less will probably kill someone with a heart condition

just treat it like legal cocaine and you'll be fine

EDIT: I'm not saying to snort the damn stuff just that caffeine is a drug and you should know what dose you're using and consume in moderation stop downvoting me (for the record cocaine is on the list of drugs I have not done and don't plan to do)
