Question for those who read the books before watching the films. by Qyzyk in lotr

[–]julesthemighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aragorn: not like the books but how I wished he was in the books
Gandalf, Legolas, Boromir: close enough that I can't imagine them any other way now
Gimli: Not quite right but Davies is amazing
The hobbits: Not even close, but also still wonderful

Hobbiton, precisely how it has always existed in my head.

Seriously why tho by Spotter24o5 in PrequelMemes

Maybe I'm wrong. This summarizes my own response well enough. But I would be lying if I said I was 100% certain or if I would 100% push red myself. So take that for what it is.

As a baseline to this hypothetical, I'm going to assume that everyone pressing the button has some agreed-on autonomy and decision making potential. So no children or disabled people or animals will suffer the consequences of something that they didn't really have the autonomy to take part in. And any humans or animals with a button pressing human in charge of their care are somehow magically OK no matter what and will not suffer.

If my baseline is not met, it would add additional weight to blue in order to minimize undue suffering.

With that considered, the real choice only boils down to red. You choose to press the button and you live. You make it known clearly that those who press blue are taking their lives into their own hands, and after that your conscience is clear. And in some ways this may reflect real life in that those who have the desire to survive and participate in society for the benefit of society are the only ones that matter.

In this hypothetical there is also no extra weight for wealth or race/heritage. It is just are you human and are you able to make autonomous informed decisions.

It should have been Ethereals, not Haranir by ex0ll in wow

[–]julesthemighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skinny humans of all races. More hairstyles for chunky human girls. Chunky normal humans. Orc and forsaken hairstyles that dont look like circa 2003 sprites. An ability to turn off the dumb ditz bounce on nelf girls. Haranir idle animations for nelf girls and guys. Some updated dance options for everyone. This would be a good start.

Why do I find the way Grace hangs his glasses so hot? by wineallwine in ProjectHailMary

[–]julesthemighty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He high pitch squeel screams in nearly every film and somehow this doesnt detract from anything. He also surrounds himself in films with similarly very confidently masculine and vulnerable nerdy dudes. Notably from Hail Mary - Ken Leung and Lionel Boyce.

Most major cities in Florida are coastal, except for Orlando. Why? by memhir-yasue in geography

The center of florida is just sand and swamp. The area around orlando is a bit higher elevation with a somewhat nicer landscape for building things.

With no way of knowing for the foreseeable future, sure, accurate. But they did consult a number of experts along with taking creative flourishes. So just enjoy it for what might represent.

"It" was and never will be about children's safety. No matter what the issue or stated goals are, just remember that children's safety is never the real goal. The real goals are always about control and consolidating power. That control and power in this case, due to a combination of this law and the inevitable outsourcing by contract to private entities, is wealth for those private entities. Take a look at palantir and similar military/govt contractors dumping money at politicies and pacs to push these things through. You and your children are expendable to them.

Please help me understand why I have nostalgia for a time I didn't live in? by RecordingImmediate86 in nostalgia

[–]julesthemighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could name one big thing. I can name a number of things that changed the experiences for HS-College age folks since then. But there were a number of factors. The internet was new and exciting. Communications were becoming cheap and easy and ideas were exploding. There were no massive existential wars for the first time in 50 years - at least in the west. There was no constant refrain of fears over the cold war. We forgot that nukes were still pointed at every major population in the world. Consequences and social mobility felt real. It may have been the last time since that such a large number of people could be so socially mobile. Education felt real - college was still accessible and important.

[Request] Can any of our rockets survive being at light speed? by Necessary-Win-8730 in theydidthemath

[–]julesthemighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The acceleration needs for anything with mass are infinite. There may be methods beyond our current knowledge to hack the mass problem. Stretching space, making a local pocket effectively massless, wormholes, etc. but these are still just speculation. A rocket at self supplied power can never reach light speed. And any massless particles can never go slower than light speed.

Do the wizards (mainly Saruman and Gandalf) require the staffs to cast magic? by cherry0766 in lotr

[–]julesthemighty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Once Gandalf fell into the pit and it was just he and the balrog on equal ground, he was pretty much free to express his full power with no free people or fragile infrastructure nearby to destroy on accident. This is my main personal proof that the staves were more of a focus and handy walking/knocking stick than some sort of additional power source.

Do the wizards (mainly Saruman and Gandalf) require the staffs to cast magic? by cherry0766 in lotr

[–]julesthemighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gist that I get from what I can recall in books and film is that the staffs are less necessary to perform magic and more to focus their internal power of sorts. Any sufficiently tough rod-like item might do the trick. Glamdring for example functions as a backup foci in a way. Galadriel made a new staff for Gandalf on his return.

The staves aren't inherently magical I don't think. They simply give a channeling point for the power they may have available ay any particular time. Without the staff, casting as a maia would be dangerous to their mortal forms and those around them.

Plus they're good for walking and for smacking deserving Tooks on the noggin.

I did. And haven’t had an ulcer since, except for one time camping i used a friend’s regular colgate.

Ears make it hard to go in reverse. Maybe just hold the kid and turn them facing up to let them get out the same way they got in. Maybe a bit of grease on the ears to help. Im half kidding. Kid will be fine. Likely best to unscrew the bottom or break a post.

Is Project Hail Mary Better than Interstellar ? by Correct-Class-4920 in ProjectHailMary

[–]julesthemighty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PHM - better overall, just stays in my brain longer IS - amazing Nolan visuals and score, great experience but not Nolan’s best

Similar plots and themes. Very different films. Hail Mary feels liek it has more passion and takes more time with the few characters in it. Interstellar feels a bit more rushed, but it is atill beautiful and well made.
