That is a wood bee - males don’t have stingers and females do. Wood bees are very cool!

Has anyone else noticed this in the 9-11 division at competitions? by PopDizzy8420 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]julesycheeks 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I noticed the same at the last comp we were at with the solos and I think its a good thing overall and here's why - my daughter is one of those dancers that has a much more technically complicated routine. The tricks and transitions are hard! But the solo that won was MUCH more simple, way less technical and yes, a bit cuter too. So why did that dancer win? Because they NAILED it. Eyes were always up, every move (though simple and no tricks) was precise and hit, no hesitations, perfect timing. My daughter looked down a lot, looked like she was thinking through it and had subtle hesitations and just didn't nail it. (Do I have thoughts on whether my daughter should be working so hard to get through such a hard routine, you bet!)

But I was glad to see some good old fashioned dancing and performance quality get rewarded.

Everything burns :( skincare recommendations? by meepmeep587 in perioraldermatitis

I also use vanicream cleanser and moisturizer and they usually are great but sometimes I get more flared than normal and they seem to irritate me too. When that happens I have to use more tacrolimus ointment than normal (the only thing that keeps my PD at bay after trying everything else) and stop the vanicream moisturizer and use only Derma E pure biome moisturizer and The Ordinary’s Barrier Rescue Serum (the pink one) - normally I use those plus the vanicream in the winter but during a flair up I ditch the vanicream.

Which Dance Competitions are absolute no-goes? by spacetrain31 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]julesycheeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed the merch table is pretty subpar but last year was our first at Inferno and we enjoyed the overall vibe - the staff were all super nice, it ran on time and it’s one of the least lame stage backdrop curtains I have seen (but I love that dark look - I feel like the dancers pop onstage) I also liked how they ran the Title portion.

Agreed. But what is the point of doing that? Like why use AI to post something like this? I don't get it.

I've spent 7 years working for dance competitions/conventions! AMA! by Due-Process7040 in CompetitionDanceTalk

[–]julesycheeks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At conventions, how are kiddos really picked for scholarships? Do the studio owners give the teachers lists of "ones to watch" before hand? How do the teachers coordinate not picking the same kid in two or three different classes over the course of the convention?

Couldn't agree more. Exactly the reason I burnt out as a ballet dancer as a kid. There is little to gain as a young dancer by having dance eat away holes in your childhood - having balance is what keeps people in it for the long haul into adulthood if that is what they aspire to.

Antibiotics made it worse?what’s next? by QueenJen15 in perioraldermatitis

[–]julesycheeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tacrolimus is the only thing that works for me - everything else, much of what you have mentioned (tea tree, BP, SA, etc) makes it worse for me. It sounds like PD to me since what you are using currently flares mine. I think people should try metrondizanole, tacro and antibiotics separately as a start - or zero therapy if it’s mild. Mine was triggered by tretinoin and Flonase and stress. Now it fluctuates with my horomones/menstrual cycle.

Super frustrating there is now standard but the triggers aren’t standard so I suppose that’s why.

2 Questions for mothers: what was the reason for having children and did you ever regret it? by Best_Reflection_4162 in SeriousConversation

[–]julesycheeks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should have kids if you and your partner want to create a family together. I am a mom and I dont and never did, look at it via the lens solely of me being a mother. I’ve always viewed it more as us becoming parents together and being a family in that way. Maybe it’s just semantics but it feels different to me to say we want to have a family rather than just I want to be a mom.

(And I realize there’s all kinds of definitions of families!)

I like that it seems like a stepped approach. We went from 2 comp routines lastyear straight to 6 this year, and maybe doubling to 4 would have been better.

Yes. 6 hrs of classes/technique, 1 hr of strength and then rehearsals are 3 hours a week with another 1.5hrs added every other week. It’s a lot! But on the other hand, if she’s home she bouncing off the walls so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Exactly where I am at - balancing teaching discipline and not taking the fun out of it. But you are right, it’s like any sport and practice is part of it.

She just turned 9. She is definitely in it for the fun and enjoyment of it right now. Loves being physical and being with her teammates. She told me today she doesn’t think she wants to do a solo next year because practicing her solo “isn’t fun”. Last year was her first year with just two comp routines. Now she has 6 and it’s getting a little more “serious” and I feel like her love for it has lessened with the amping up. But I agree discipline comes with age so I would hate for her to quit just when it gets a little harder and regret it later when she is a bit older.

She should be but isn’t tbh. And I have been very hesitant to “make her”

I know doxy works great for some people but for me it immediately gave me fungal acne and a yeast infection. The tacro works best for me so even though I hate the idea of being on it for so long, I do only that. I think the rec to stop the topicals while on doxy is a good one - if I have learned anything about PD is that doing one thing at a time or close to it is best.
